Dear Ellen:
My husband and I were supposed to celebrate our third wedding anniversary last week, but he forgot all about it! He didn't send me flowers, or buy me anything---he usually buys me jewelry---we didn't even go out to dinner! I don't know what to do---I am so upset!
Answer: Let's see---I am sure you greeted him at the door dressed in that perfect, sexy black dress that he loves. Wearing the perfume he gave you for Christmas. And, oh yes, fresh flowers were on the living room table and I'm sure he could smell his favorite dinner cooking in the kitchen.
Anniversaries are not about what new piece of jewelry you should get (or any other gift for that matter). They're about spending time together and celebrating---together. Isn't that why the two of you married in the first place?
Don't wait for your next anniversary. Cook his favorite meal. Wear the perfume he gave you. Put rose petals in the bathtub. Chill a bottle of champagne. Send the kids to the grandparents. See what happens.
