Training Day

This week 17 Rio Grande Valley high school JROTC units numbering 250 cadets gathered at Marine Military Academy in Harlingen for leadership training. Darlene Leija of Mission High School crawls through the mud pit course at MMA, the last course for her platoon. Ricardo Garcia jumps from a 20-foot telephone pole in an attempt to hit a floating bag in front of him. The course helps cadets overcome their fear of heights and builds confidence. A leadership course trains cadets how to solve problems by working together. Rodney Rodriguez, left, (Edcouch-Elsa), Alma Montalvo (Brownsville Lopez), and Vincent Benavides (Harlingen South) work together by using planks to cross a span.
