What is the biggest issue presidential candidates need to address?

The United States is having problems with the economy; what needs to be done is stop giving WIC and food stamps for the people that don’t work at all. If they want to eat and be healthy they should start working; living off of the government is not the only option. What will they do when the government runs out of money? How are they going to feed their family? They have to work it doesn’t matter if you’re young or old it’s never too late to succeed in life.

Lupita Lugo, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that poverty because of unemployment is a very big problem in our world today. I understand that people have to be let go because of whatever reason their boss has, but it’s still very awful. Everybody needs something to keep them supported. If people have no jobs, then they lose their home. No job, no money, and no food or clothing means poverty. And when people try to find jobs, people think that because they’re homeless, they are not educated, and therefore wouldn’t do well.

Nicole Melendez, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

Ronald Reagan once said, "Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." I believe that presidential candidates should address the high unemployment rate. In my opinion, economic problems should be addressed because there are people on the streets with empty pockets. Rich people are getting richer and richer. Poor people are getting poorer and poorer. Unfortunately, there are not enough jobs to provide for everyone. Citizens are desperately trying to make a living. Therefore, if this was addressed and helped, there would be lots of smiles underneath the red, white, and blue

Mariel Calara, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

I think the fact that some Americans don’t have jobs is a very important issue. Without jobs, those people won’t be able to support themselves or their families. You need to pay bills and taxes but without money you can’t do that. Besides paying the government, people need to buy food to eat and clothes to wear. Our employment is an important part of our lifestyle. We need it. A lot of people are unemployed and with the economy so low this is a very sad time. I believe that presidential candidates should address this issue not only because it affects some people but because it affects people everywhere.

Alexa Arriaga, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

As all of us know, there are many different topics the presidential candidates talk about but one issue that really bugs me is how many teachers work over time and they don’t get paid for it. If they want to stay later to organize or clean up they are doing that on their own time. However, when the principal tells them they have to do something mandatory they should at least get paid for it. This is especially unfair for teachers who have families. They can only spend a small amount of time with them. This is an important issue that needs to be changed and I think that this is something presidential candidates should discuss with the public. I know for a fact that everyone cherishes family time and everyone wants a few dollars to spend when possible. If your job is stopping you from doing that I bet you would want to do something about it.

Rosa Barrera, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

I think the presidential candidates should focus on the problems with America’s jobs and economy. Because of today’s economy, jobs are scarce and hard to get. Poverty is becoming more and more of problem in the U.S. Homes are being foreclosed and people are being kicked out on the streets. The rich are just wasting money when the poor have none. I think the poverty can be somewhat fixed if the rich would help the poor and donate money to the poor.

Jakeb Denison, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

There are many issues about our economy but the most important, of all in my opinion is the price of gas. Gas is the most important thing because, we use it in everyday life; It is what powers our cars, trucks, and vans. Without gas we wouldn’t be able to go to places and the problem is the gas prices meaning money. If the gas prices were lower I know that there would be less homeless people in this world. If it were lower lives for many would be easier. Therefore I know that the presidential candidates should lower gas prices.

Gerard Cardenas, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

Some of the issues that I think that presidential candidates should address to is terrorism. People from other countries have tried to do terrorist attacks but, we have to get them to stop. Another, issue that they can address to is about the taxes. People are already having trouble to pay their bills or rents. So, the government must lower down the taxes so, that people won’t drop out of their houses and become poor. If that happens to people, it will be bad for our economy.

Arvin Noble, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

I think that the presidential candidates work to should lower the gas prices. One reason is that people are losing money every day. I SAW MY MOM GET GAS AND THE PRICE WAS $87.93! That money can go to food or clothes. My dad has to drive from Harlingen to Brownville and back that uses a lot of gas. We have to pay TAXES and we still need to pay a lot of money for gas. The government should give us a hand with lowering gas prices. WE are a community; we are one.

Andres Ibarra, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

A lot of presidential candidates have talked on and on about how to create jobs for those who are unemployed, but will they work? I don’t see everybody with jobs. Really the main thing we could do is try and create more businesses and lower expectations1 I mean most of these people didn’t grow up in a rich and wealthy family and didn’t get that good of an education. I mean really, cut them some slack their trying really hard man. Also more businesses means more money for the government which, in-turn, help the economy and today’s major debt problem and budget cuts (that seems to be getting everybody all mad, if fix people will love you…just say in). Well that’s what I think…it may and it may not work, but hell, we can dream can’t we.

Ian Cook, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

Some issues that the presidential candidates should address are terrorism. Because a few months ago a man was planning to attack the government with huge remote control airplanes. Terrorism is very scary because they attack for silly reasons like they don’t like the president, or they just hate the world. Like Osama Bin Laden people that helped him with 9/11 what to strike again. These people want to avenge him because they think his plans were great but they were just very cruel.

Matthew Vasquez, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

I think that there are a lot of issues that the presidential candidates should address. Personally though, I would address the issue of abortion. Nothing good comes out of abortion, and nothing ever will. Everybody is always talking about how murdering is a crime, but abortion is just like murdering except of the unborn. How can people do that without feeling guilty? Maybe the better question is: How can they be allowed to do it? I think that the presidential candidates should say something about making abortion illegal. Some people might complain about it, but if you really don’t want the child, why not just wait and give it up for adoption? I know that abortion may not be the biggest issue right now, but it is important to me.

Renee Rubiano, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

I think the presidential candidates should address the end of abortion. I believe that a woman giving up a beautiful baby they have is wrong. The women that are pregnant shouldn’t have to kill their child. They should either keep the child of put it up for adoption, instead of killing an innocent child. Many women may be afraid because people told them stories about what happened when they had their own babies. Most of these women don’t know because they may have not experienced it yet. When a woman brings a new child into the world, think of it as God blessing you with a new baby boy or girl.

Aniza Lazo, St. Anthony’s Catholic School

Teacher: Gregory Rustico

I would say the biggest issue in presidential candidates need to address is the money problem. Why? Well for many reasons of course that people today are struggling with. Many citizens hassle everyday with their bills and they can’t pay because their jobs pay too little money. Therefore making they decide to move to another state to provide money but it will be the same issue. So the if the population has a decrease in money that forces the increase of stores and other places. Making it even harder for the people to pay for their needs but no wants.

Yamilex Garcia, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

One of the biggest issues presidential candidates need to address is racism within themselves. Many people in the past election when Obama was elected were racist and prejudice towards him. Citizens of the U.S didn’t want to choose Obama because of his skin color, and this can be a very big factor in the race towards presidency.

Diego Guerra, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I believe that the strongest issue the presidential candidates need to address is the economy. The economy would branch out and other issues follow the economy. Taxes, healthcare, war and many other things precede the economy. If they fix that everything else would follow. This of course won’t be something easy to fix and that is why politics fix the minor issues.

Alondrita Barron, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think, the health care for us American citizens, not a lot of us have very good health care and it doesn’t really help that the president nor candidates are not really paying attention to this either. But I think mostly, it would be the jobs for the elder. With that whole Social Security thing, like try to help them out with that or something even if they are really old most of the are Veterans, they helped served our country shouldn’t we give them at least something back in return? The President and Candidates as well are not paying attention to what REALLY needs to be focused on.

Abigail Gonzalez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think one of the biggest problems the president should fix is end the war. All of our troops are away from home and a lot have fallen soldiers and all those families that are here waiting for them to come back. Also all the immigrants laws that are being passed in all the states, for example Alabama and Arizona. I think it’s bad because of all the people. I understand why they made them but it’s still bad to discriminate against people. It’s called Racial Profiling. This is some of the problems that should be fixed.

Damaris Perez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

Presidential Candidates should try and fit the economy by bringing more foreign jobs back home. And if they are able to do so they would help the economy because, more people would have more money to spend when shopping, thus reviving the economy.

Brianna Menchaca, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

Unemployment is one of the biggest issues that need to be addressed. They need to figure out how to create more jobs for Americans.

Casey Gatton, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

Presidential Candidates need to address recession and the senseless war. Bring our troops home from a country that doesn’t want them there!

Nora Katana Sims, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The U.S Government should focus more on the economy. We are in a recession once again, and I know that this is not an easy fix. It can’t be done overnight. But that is why we should deal with it now. Before it grows worse.

Airik Sanchez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think the government needs to do something about the economy. This affects the citizens a lot because every day everything gets more expensive and that affects the people’s pocket. At the same time the government is thinking about taking benefits away and that’s not a good decision. Something needs to be done.

Violeta Rico, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I believe that when running for president you must address the problems that are causing the most harm to the people, basically what people really care about. There’s a lot of things right now that a president could address for example, the "economic crisis", the millions of people without jobs, the troops in Iraq, the oil crisis, inflation, Medicare, and so much more. The point is there’s probably an endless amount of things a candidate could address.

Jose Olivo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

Presidential candidates need as many votes possible obviously to win, and in order to do that they must get everyone to like them. They must be able talk about balancing money right, be good with politics, about their concerns on war, show fair rights, and to reach out to all the people and their opinions. My believe, is that the candidates have to make people like them by almost giving them what they want to hear and being able to keep their promises on improving the country in every which way possible.

Jennifer Villanueva, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I don’t know too much about politics, but I once saw a movie called Sicko by Michael Moore and it shows we don’t have best health care. In the movie, a man in the U.S. had chopped off several fingers and had to choose which ones he wanted, he obviously chooses the cheaper one. In France, a man also chopped off several fingers, but the key difference is that he got all of them put back on at no cost. Many Americans go into debt from hospital expenses! The health care in America is ridiculous, and it must be addressed.

Ariya Tafolla, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue that Presidential Commodities need to address is financial aid. A lot of people in this country have financial problems; even people with an education are having hard times with the economy these days. The government must open their eyes and see that people need help. I know that a lot of people take advantage of the program but that is not the point. There are people with families that are working pay check to pay check, and I don’t think it is right that there our families in our country that barely have enough to eat. This is why they should focus on financial aid.

Luis Pecina, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest would be to address family and healthcare issue. The presidential candidates really need to address this issue, because we need the upcoming generation to be able to do create more technology and other things, and if they don’t have this issue then we can’t be able to create new things.

Diego Gonzalez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

One of the biggest issues that our country is facing today is our health care. There are particularly 47 million Americans without health insurance. Many of our poor income families are not being able to supply their family needs because of the health expenses. Also our middle income families are becoming poor income because of these expenses. If the new presidential candidates were too aim their election at health issues and ways to improve them. They would save lives of thousands due to the health expenses that we Americans face today.

Marcos I. Gutierrez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

They need to address the truth. Some of these presidents say that they are going to help them people and all this stuff, but usually it doesn’t happen. I think one day people will just get tired of listening to the candidates and just stop voting. I think we need someone who will keep their word for everything they say.

Andres Dena, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue that the presidential candidates need to address is that we need more teachers in our states. Every year good teachers are let go and it’s not fair. Why do we get the bad teachers when yet they don’t do anything? Another thing they need to address is they need to stop worrying about themselves and think of the people in the United States.

Celina Casanova, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

Issues that presidential candidates need to address are the debt of out country, the lack of jobs, and how they can find a way to control and maintain heath benefits.

Rebecca Benitez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

He needs to address is the bad economy in our country. It affects the entire nation and our former presidents have not improved it much through their terms.

Irene Infante, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think the biggest issue that the presidents need to address is that of our economic statistics. I think this because here in the valley there have been many foreclosures on people’s homes. Yes, I know that if they don’t do this hey will lose money financially and people won’t want to pay their mortgages, but what about someone that has been paying their mortgages? What are they supposed to do? They have been paying their mortgages for a very long time and then for them to get behind in one payment, and lose their home! I don’t think that’s fair. This is my opinion in what the president should address.

Jackie Ruiz, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The state of the economy is the most pressing issue, and polls are clearly unanimous on this point. There’s no great mystery here. If there are three main powerhouses in the global economy the United States, Europe, and East Asia and a Eurozone financial crisis threatens to crash one of the three, the consequences everywhere would be severe. Given all of this, as much as we want to believe the state of our economy is in our hands, the "Euromess" will have a significant impact on what happens here in the near future arguably more than any other economic issue.

Kimberly Segura, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

One issue a presidential candidate must bring up is the issue of the economy. The current status of our economy is quite frankly, sad. America used to be known as the worlds greatest nation on the planet. Now, in my opinion due to our massive debt, we are the bottom of the food chain; not far from South America. The world now views us greedy disgusting slobs, who’s only goal is to expand and influence the rest of the world. If things don’t straighten out in dear country who knows what the outcome could be. Imagine a world where there is no ‘home of the brave and land of the free’. Imagine a world where America is nothing but a faint memory, a shadow of the past, a third world country.

Rafael Lozano, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue presidential candidates need to address is bulling. Bulling has gotten out of hand. Whether it’s saying mean words, or pushing someone into a locker these actions are causing kids to feel worse about themselves and this leads to suicide. This needs to be stopped.

Emerie Sanchez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue that the presidential candidates need to address is that we need more teachers in our states. Every year good teachers are let go and it’s not fair. Why do we get the bad teachers when yet they don’t do anything? Another thing they need to address is they need to stop worrying about themselves and think of the people in the United States.

Celina Casanova, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

People are running crazy like chickens with their heads cut off. Hoping, wishing and praying for a good job to come along. Unemployment for America is a sky high problem and the states need to get back on the ground to work hard once again. Every time the news is on there is the topic of people searching for a job, talking about how life is hard and how they need to find a way to put food on the table or clothes on their child’s back. As an America I believe in the America dream, to do whatever you put your mind to, work to bone to get what you need or desire and to live as happy as you possible can. All the men and women need to keep their heads high and they need to solve the unemployment problem by bring jobs back to United States, talking and making a change in their town and make a difference and might start the change to our America.

Laurie Solis, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

Many problems that the president has to address are to lower taxes. The government has citizens pay such high taxes that most people can’t afford. The president also needs to be more connected with the people. We elect a president and then he/she starts making up the rules. The USA would be a better place if the president would involve him/her self into more social activates with us the people. I understand very well that the president can’t meet every single US citizen but hey it would hurt to try. The president should also put more funds into the education system.

Dudley Shine, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue the presidential candidates should address is (no surprise here) the economy. They need to find a way to employ Americans affected by the economic decline.

Robert Garza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The declining economy on the US, how they’re going to fix it, and where they’re plans will put America in their four year term as president. I think they must address healthcare or taxes because those seem to be the biggest issue when it comes to politics and it would help a lot of people in the process.

Christian Espinoza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I believe that the presidential candidates should focus on our foreign money and our foreign affairs. I think if we keep the money in the nation then we would have a lot more to spend for our own economic needs and we will be able to take care of our nations own issues.

Zachary Oestreich, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The president should focus on the future oil. In 7 years we will have an oil shortage; industrialized countries will demand more gas and the supply will not be able to meet the demand.

Alyssa Ramirez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue that presidential candidates have to address is the economy and jobs. They are trying to fix the economy by getting more job offers, and trying to fix job offers by getting a better economy. The candidates running are promising the people more job affairs, and I don’t think that they are going to do that if they get the presidential spot.

Elias De Leon, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I believe the biggest issue presidential candidates need to address is the fact that the United States is practically in an economic depression. As of now the United States of America is in bankruptcy, and owes billions of dollars to other countries. The ideal presidential candidate would have to be able to stabilize the economy and gradually take The United States out of debt.

Katarina Rodriguez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think the biggest issue that Presidents have to bring up is the real violence over seas, the stories not being told to us by the mainstream media. Even though our government has been known to lie to its’ people, it’s important for the public to know the real story.

Jacob Martin, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I believe that the biggest issue Presidential candidates need to address is that there are too many people that are unemployed. Ever since our economy went down, many people have had to suffer by losing their jobs. As of today many people still struggle in getting a job.

Ruben Marin, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think that the president should focus more on programs for young children that are not as fortunate as others. The reason why I say this is because this generation that we live in, isn’t a good one. It all begins with the young adults that are growing up, if they reach out to the young troubled kids, then maybe this world would be a better place, and less people will be living with a minimum wage job.

Marylou Martinez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue presidential candidates need to address is the economy. They need to clarify the issues going on around us all and how they plan to help deal with those issues to get people on their side; because no one just wants to vote for someone who plans on saying on these issues and then not fall through with them. Another issue presidential candidates need to address is the immigration system and how they want to deal with that issue. People want to know how this candidates plan to help our government and make it a better place to live.

Jensine Villarreal, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think oil is the biggest issue that Presidential candidates need to address, because in the next few years there might be a global oil shortage. People are using too much oil and are wasting it. If this keeps on happening there would be a global oil shortage and that will cause gas prices to rise up tremendously.

Jaime Aguiniga, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

On any given day in the United States of America, people are constantly talking about our high unemployment rates, high gas prices and sky rocketing food prices. Families are struggling to make ends meet because the private business sector and our federal government continue to help the poor and rich but completely ignore the middle income families. Our social welfare policies are set up to provide free housing, food stamps, and health insurance to Americans that fall below the poverty level. To make matters worse, these same social welfare policies also help wealthy Americans by giving them huge tax breaks and government subsidies to make up for their business and farming losses. Middle income citizens receive little or no help from our federal government. These Americans are forced to purchase expensive health insurance, pay higher taxes, and their children cannot apply for federal financial aide because middle income parents make too much to qualify. Paying college from their pockets is extremely difficult because college tuition rates continue to rise; thus, making it difficult for middle income Americans to pay for their children’s college education. I personally believe that one of the biggest issues our current presidential candidates should address is the unfair treatment of "middle income" Americans.

The President must realize that "middle income" America is the backbone of our country, and this "blue collar" worker group has contributed more towards the rise and success of our nation, than any other social class. Compared to the lower income group and even the wealthy group, "middle income" Americans are the ones who require less maintenance from our federal government. For example, lower income Americans have become so dependent on government assistance that it has almost bankrupted our government. Millions of dollars are given out to the poor in the form of food stamps, free health insurance and housing and just recently, our federal government had to "bail out" the filthy rich during the housing market crash. During the campaign trail, Presidential candidates love to travel to states where there are a large number of "middle income" voters, and fill them with false hopes and promises. They know that "blue collar" works do take the time to vote and study the issues that are part of their campaign speeches. In the end, the "middle income" sector winds up voting them into office yet they do nothing to address and fix their problems.

In conclusion, I would like to share that this topic has really opened my eyes on how our federal government spends their money, time and efforts. Middle income Americans must continue to rise to the challenge of finally receiving what they have always deserved. It is called, "equal opportunities" and taking care of the hardest working people in America.

Allyson Galindo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue that presidential candidates need to address is to keep their promises, and not ignore the problems the people have, hence getting elected they forget about every thing
they promised us, the people, and once their presidential term finishes, they brag about not getting elected, here by they need to address the issues they will fix and the promises
they will complete.

Fabian Montelongo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I believe that the biggest issue Presidential Candidates need to address is education. I believe its education because North America is very low on education standards. Unlike China and Japan who have a very high percentage on education. The presidential candidates should be stricter on education, and get more text books, more technology to get humanity learning. Instead of focusing on money like lowering peoples salary, etc. They need to focus on what is going to benefit not only certain individuals, but everyone.

Valentina Mandujano, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The stress for being good president trying to prove he’s a good candidate to govern our country.

Johanna Rodriguez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I believe the biggest issue that the presidential candidates have to evaluate, address and review is illegal immigration because we have millions of people here illegally living in the United States. They need to pass new laws that protect illegal immigrants from being deported back to their countries when all they try to do is make a living here and try living a better life. They need to deport the illegal immigrants that commit violent crimes instead of the innocent children trying to get a better education for themselves and their families.

Miranda Gonzalez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

In my opinion, the Candidates need to focus more on illegal immigration laws. More and More illegal immigrants are crossing the border to America. It is getting real dangerous because if more of them keep coming in at the same rate, then the U.S. could be at risk for danger, especially if you live in a border town close to another country. They need to focus more on assisting the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for guarding the borders of America to keep it safe.

Luis Rodriguez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think that the subject of federal jobs should be discussed. Federal jobs across the nation are being lost. Employees of these jobs are being cut, even firefighters! My mom for example works for a federal research center in the valley, and she and more than 100+ employees are losing their jobs due to budget cuts. My mom was also told that nine other agricultural research centers are being shut down due to the same problem. This subject should be discussed because other employees need to support there families, and they can’t if there jobs are going down the toilet because of federal overspending. I think that these jobs need to be discussed in order to save them.

Johnny Thompson, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

People running for president in the up coming years should address the different wars going on between our country and others. They should mention why getting into other countries affairs helps benefit us the people. What should also be addressed is where people stand job wise. Instead of avoiding problems they should just focus on delivering a solution.

Clarissa Castillo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue presidential candidates need to address is the fact that they will be at risk of danger. Not only the family of the candidate, but friends, family members, and other close people will be as well. If the candidate is at the urge of winning the election, he/she will receive huge amount of attention, which can be great at times, but deadly as well. Because of all that attention they will be all at risk of being kidnapped, harmed, or even killed. Soon, no doubt, the candidate will be harassed or threatened to drop out of the election.

Lucio Pena, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think an important issue that the presidential candidates need to address would be jobs. The thing that most people don’t think about is switching to buying things that were made in America. By buying things that were made in America, we are creating new jobs; we are wasting less money on import expenses, so that we save more money and waste less, and we are getting better quality in our things.

Angelina Vasquez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think our Presidential candidates should be focusing themselves about how low the poverty level and the frequent usage of unemployment and how to fix it. They should be making bills and trying to pass new laws that will help out the common man and the big businesses everyone is worried about keeping happy. In order for anybody to get voted in they rely on the vote of the common man so they should be helping out the very people who make their position possible and not putting the voters at the level where hate and distrust circle them, the voters.

Sierra Pena, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think the biggest issue that a presidential candidate should address is the economy and mainly focusing on creating jobs. They should focus on fixing our economy by creating jobs because there is a lot of people that are homeless, hungry, in debt and are on the verge of being foreclosed.

Diana Garza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The biggest issue presidential candidates need to focus on is the United State’s economy. Before the U.S. gets involved in civil wars over seas they need to focus on getting our economy back on track. America is always getting involved in other countries problems, when in reality we need to focus on lowering the unemployment rate and start getting jobs for American citizens. The United States built hospitals, schools, and mosque in Iraq, giving their people hundreds of job opportunities. If they can do all that over there, then that should be able to easily do that in the United States of America. The presidential candidate that plans on winning should be the selfish type that plans on helping only "OUR" economy.

Amanda Arreola, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think that the presidential candidates should really address our economic crisis. Now we are in dept to many nations without a way to repay them. Due to this situation we are in, we can even fall into another economic depression. So I strongly support my response that the candidates should address this situation we are in.

Martin Mendoza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

There are many problems that the presidential candidates have to face in this world. Many people don’t have jobs; many people don’t have a home; many people don’t have an education; many people don’t have support. I believe that one major problem that they would have to face is immigration. What we have is freedom, freedom that others want. Not many places in the world give second chances but the United States of America is all about giving chances to others in need because they believe that the more chances they get the better they will become in life.

Gabriela Becerra, Weslaco High School

In my opinion every presidential candidate needs to act on this nation’s problem which is the economy. Candidates have been bringing up brilliant suggestion for the problem and how to improve it, how it’s going to bring more jobs, how it will reduce the debt of the nation, but there as been no change. We are worse today than we were 2 years ago. The results have been an increase on crime, poverty, and war on drugs that has cost so many deaths. Lots of people have lost their jobs, homes, and have gone to different extremes just to survive.

Brenda Lee Cardenas, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

In my opinion, what the presidential candidates need to address is the bullying going on throughout the world. There have been cases where kids, even teens are being teased, even killed because of stupidity reasons. Either because they are gay, short, or "ugly" according to some people, maybe even just strange, and they get picked on for that. Everybody’s different. Something needs to be done about it. It’s causing harm to people throughout the whole world.

Clarissa Lopez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

The presidential candidates need to address the fact, discrimination and racism haven been banished from our country many years ago to due the fact that at that era of life, colored people and white people would get compared to and would discriminate on blacks. However as of today discrimination is still going around in our country. America is the home of the free and of the brave; we are all one person no matter the color of our skin. We fought so hard to make this country what is now called America. The bill of rights has every amendment that our heroics created in order to use in needs of chaos. Why are we still neglecting the fact that skin colors aren’t important? We all need to get a sense of thought from our candidates in order to understand the rights and wrongs we make everyday that goes by.

Gemma Mandujano, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

I think that the president should focus more on programs for young children that are not as fortunate as others. The reason why I say this is because this generation that we live in, isn’t a good one. And it all begins in with the young adults that are growing up. If they reach out to the young troubled kids, then maybe this world would be a better place, and less people will be living in a minimum wage job.

Marylou Martinez, Weslaco High School

Our economic system, we need to get out of debt already. I think if a candidate running can maybe have ways of solving our debt problems, they might get the most votes.

Fabiola Compian, Veterans Memorial Academy

The biggest issue I believe presidential candidates need to address is our high debt problems. These issues lead our country into a recession and may lead us into another depression. Society, businesses, homes, and families are falling apart. The government isn’t helping to improve anything at all.

Sierra Flores, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

I think that an issue that they would need to address would be foreign wars. The United States tries to be the "good guy" a lot and gets involved in things that shouldn’t. The U.S. has good intentions, but sometimes it’s better to stay out of other countries business.

Jorge A. Moreno, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

The biggest issues they need to address to the public are the lack of jobs, and lack of money. There are many reasons for these economic difficulties. One of the biggest factors contributing is illegal immigration.

Oscar Ramos, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

Two of the biggest issues the Presidential candidates need to address are the economy and immigration. The economy needs to be fixed because many people are being left without jobs. The immigration also needs to be fix3ed to. We don’t have a good economy now and with more immigrants here illegally that just makes it worse. This is why I think these candidates need to address these two big issues in the United States.

Vicky Beltran, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

I think it is jobs, they better mention that they will create more jobs. They should also address the economy, because it’s all messed up. They need to address how they will fix the border, there are too many people crossing the border illegally and taking our jobs.

Eduardo Banda, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

I believe the biggest issue a Presidential candidates need to address is hunger. Hunger is the U.S. and other countries should be addressed. There are many people in the U.S. and the world that are starving. The U.S. Government has done nothing to stop this tragedy. "The Government has money for wars, but they don’t have money to feed the poor". – Tupack Shakur.

Frank Diaz, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

They need to address issues on jobs and homes. Many people are losing their jobs and homes. If they are going to run, let it be for a great reason, not just to have power and money. They should also address the illegal drug issue. Drugs are passing each day through our border. Someone needs to figure out how to stop these illegal drugs.

Nereyda Lucio, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

The biggest issues the Presidential candidates face are the economy, immigration, and troops in Afghanistan! Many people need jobs, and they should get them back from illegals. They also need to address on how they will get all our troops back. Everyone wants their daughter and sons back safely.

Angel Garcia, Veterans Memorial Academy

Teacher: Robert Leal

Things in my opinion that the president should address would have to be maybe the war on drugs. Many people have trouble here down by the valley with all the violence, but imagine the attention that will pointed out on this matter, the possibilities that would be or could be greater. The reason I say that is only because if people from other parts of the U.S. would know about the violence from here down south then they would realize how bad it is with all the drugs crossing. I’ve talked to people from other states and they have told me themselves I never heard about there being battles between cartels near the border.

Pedro Moreno, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

I would say one major issue presidential candidates need to fix is our countries debt. America is $14,947,413,755,962 in debt and growing; I don’t know about anyone else, but this is a major problem in my opinion. This debt situation is also hurting our citizens by the government taxing us an unreasonably high amount. I think presidential candidates should fix this problem before spending money we don’t have trying to fix another country, when we don’t even have ours in order.

Deanna Longoria, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

I think that the biggest issue Presidential candidates need to address is the immigration issue. They have to address that most importantly because of all the problems it’s causing. When they start deporting people they are sometimes separating families and leave children with out their father or mother. Some of those people are just here to work and give a better life to their families. In the other side of the coin some of those people they deport are criminals that just come to our country to cause harm and we have to keep those away from here. There is two side of the immigration issue but what would be better without harming the people and the country.

Rebecca Torres, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

The biggest issue that Presidential candidates need to address is the immigration problem. This has become a big issue to the United States of America, and that’s because the Presidential candidates haven’t done anything to solve this problem. If we keep letting drug dealers and killers come to our country we the people wouldn’t feel safe and in peace anymore. We as citizens want the best for our country and we hope that someone or somebody stops all this immigration issues that are happening now.

Juana Celvera, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

The biggest issues presidential candidates need to address are border security, terrorism, and the economy. First off, our border security needs improvement because cartel members still manage to smuggle drugs and illegal immigrants one way or another. If illegal immigration continues, we will soon become over-populated in some cities. Terrorism definitely is a big issue because terrorists will not stop at any cost to try and harm our country. I think that someday they will plot something bigger than September 11. Our economy is also very important because people are jobless and they need money. Gas prices are at an all time high and it is changing the way we live our life. Consumers are spending more money paying for gas, than paying money for our own personal use.

Jose Rodriguez, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

I believe that the biggest issue Presidential candidates need to address is focusing on keeping illegal immigrants out of the U.S., and for the ones who are already here should be given a chance to help the economy out. If they don’t do anything here then what’s the point of them being here. They are only going to make the economy worse, for those who aren’t doing anything they should just get deported. Even though it sounds mean, it’s what’s best for us, being we can barely handle ourselves, so why would we want to take care of other people.

Desirae Cabrera, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

The biggest issue the Presidential candidates have to address is getting our economy back on track. People are out of jobs making it harder for them to pay bills and some are just barely making ends meet. They say they can make more jobs, but in reality they can’t. We need a candidate that can put his or her money where their mouth is. Once a successful candidate can prove themselves worthy enough to take responsibility and fix our poorly operating economy then that’s when we can worry about other problematic situations.

Jeffrey Gonzales, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

Perhaps the biggest issue that presidential candidates need to address these days is the troubled economy. In recent months the stock market has taken a historic plunge, national banking corporations have gone bankrupt, and thousands of homeowners unable to afford their mortgages are being forced to leave. In my opinion addressing this issue will make the economy to a more efficient system and bring relief to all that suffer from it.

Elias Flores, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

I believe the biggest issue that the presidential candidates need to address is how they plan getting our economy back on top. Despite President Obama’s efforts unemployment rate is still a major issue in our economy. I know that in some places the unemployment rate has decreased significantly but this doesn’t fix the problem nation wide. Another problem in our economy is the amount of debt we’re in with China. In my opinion we should stop importing so many goods from other countries and produce some things here in the United States. This will not only produce jobs but it will decrease the amount of debt we’re in.

Mariana Sorias, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

The issue of jobs is one of the most important issues presidential candidates need to address. There are not enough jobs and people need money to get what they want and need. Now a day everything is expensive and people are wasting more money than what they have. Some students look for jobs so they could bring money home and help with the bills, but not all of them find one. I think that there should be more jobs for everyone.

Karina Carranza, San Benito High School

Teacher: Dagoberto Pena

I think the biggest issue presidential candidates need to worry about is drug trafficking. Most crimes are drug related events because people are under the influence of drugs and are suffering the effects of the drugs. The cartels are killing over drug trade routes. People are spending all there money for drugs and children aren’t getting fed so there parents can buy drugs. Women and Men are prostituting themselves just to make money to buy drugs. The money is ending up in the hands of drug dealers. Parents are claiming that god or the devil told them to kill their children because they are under the influence of drugs. By stopping drug trafficking it will stop a number of future crimes. It may take time, persistence, determination, and perseverance to change this but it is possible.

The biggest issue Presidential candidates need to address is the war. Millions of dollars are being spent on an endless war that the U.S. simply can not win. With the lives of so many soldiers already lost the Presidential candidates need to really consider if we can really afford to stay in a war that that has already hurt us in so many ways. The U.S. has already spent more than ten years on this issue when there are many more issues that need serious attention. By first dealing the issue of war we can then focus on other issues that are actually affecting our nation at this time.

In my opinion the presidential candidates really need to fight on the drug war issue. I have grown up in an environment of peer pressure and trust me it isn’t easy saying no when you got all your friends around calling names n talking smack but, I honestly hope they put total effort into this issue to prevent this from occurring with later on in life when I do have kids. I not to soon but soon will start a life and maybe a family and I wouldn’t want my son or daughter to be influenced by to much stuff like that. I know I can’t stop them from being influenced by all this stuff I mean come on I live like 5 minutes from the border. What I am saying is if the presidential candidates really put there foot down and really do something about all these drugs coming into the United States they can really stop a lot of deaths, drop outs, failures etc.

Ruben Huerta, San Benito High School

I believe the biggest issue a Presidential candidate needs to address is about the economy. What is their plan to help fix it? My question is will there be enough money to be given to students who plan to go to college when they apply for financial aid, and will there be jobs waiting for us when we get out of college. Because I wouldn’t want to go to college for a long time majoring in a career I really enjoy and come to find out there is no job openings, or hear that no one is hiring for that sought of job because there is no money. They need to let the people know when exactly they are going to change the way we handle the money. So we can have a better idea on how the future is going to be.

Ashley Andrade, San Benito High School

Candidates have to address the housing issue that we have in the United States. The reason housing being the biggest issue, it’s because housing is affecting our economy and if there is no housing recovery then there is no economy recovery. Also a normal housing economic can affect the economy just alone by 17% and now that the economy is even worse it has affected it drastically. I believe that President Obama should address this immediately and no doubt that if President Obama can lower the payments for houses people would consider on buying houses and then the economy start looking a little better.

Daniel Martinez, San Benito High School

Our biggest issues would be our economy and how to get U.S citizens employed. We also need to focus on education and how to get the U.S back on top as one of the world’s smartest countries. The last issue that would mean a lot to me is how to stop the violence here in the valley involving the cartels, or any of the border towns in the United States.

Eddric Juarez, San Benito High School

The biggest problem right now in America is the economy. Borrowing millions of dollars but not paying isn’t helping America. It’s leaving 1/4 of Americans without jobs, making it harder and harder to improve their quality of life.

Alejandro Banda, San Benito High School

In my opinion these candidates need to address employment and education. Jobs are needed right now so people can support their families. Education is also important because students want to get their diploma.

Felipe Guzman, San Benito High School

Teacher: David Means

The main issue they need to address more aggressively should be the national debt. $14.4 trillion dollars is an unbelievable amount of money and it is preventing the whole country from progressing economically. If the United States had zero debt, more jobs would open up, more bills would be paid and more families would be under a lot less stress in their daily lives.

Jacob Arguelles, San Benito High School

Teacher: David Means

I think that presidential candidates need to address unemployment. If they promise more jobs and actually do what they say, more U.S citizens would have a better lifestyle. Also, more people will believe in the candidates and they, in turn, will have a better chance of being elected.

Gabriela Herrera, San Benito High School

Teacher: David Means

The biggest issue presidential candidates need to address is the economy. There needs to be an increase in the number of jobs in the United States so that people can afford to spend money. With a weak economy, the U.S., as a whole, seems weak. Living in the U.S. with a poor economy has made everyone’s life more stressful. The poor economy also lessens the opportunity for higher education for some students’ which is an important factor for a successful life in the U.S. With our current economical situation, success just seems out of reach for so many.

Elizabeth Vasquez, San Benito High School

Teacher: David Means

The biggest issue that presidential candidates need to address is unemployment. The fact is that people need jobs to be able to survive, to live a descent lifestyle and to be able to afford shelter and other basic needs. As the years go by more and more problems are created by the decisions of our leaders. It affects us in every way because, as citizens, we drive the country and help run it with our employment. So jobs are important for our very survival.

Estefania Casas, San Benito High School

Teacher: David Means

I believe that the biggest issue presidential candidates need to address would be the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So much money is spent money that could help out the country pay off our debt. Also, these wars have claimed the lives of many U.S. soldiers. Something should be done to end these wars and bring our soldiers home safely.

Guadalupe Garza, San Benito High School

Teacher: David Means

The biggest issue that the Presidential Candidates need to address is our economy. The government is being extremely generous by providing food stamps, Medicare, and other assistance. Many people take advantage of the system and don’t realize that other people really need it. The candidates should really think about doing something that ensures that the people receiving those benefits are using them for the right reasons and actually need them. Most of the time it’s lazy people that abuse the system. They want things handed to them with no sacrifice on their part.
Kasandra Lartigue, San Benito High School

I think that the biggest issue Presidential Candidates need to address is our economy. Everybody says that we have a poor economy and that it’s getting worse. I don’t know much about politics, but my question is why don’t they do anything about the economy? I see people complaining about no jobs, but I haven’t seen or noticed Presidential Candidates doing anything about it.
