La Feria commissioners renew permit for eight-liner hall with no-smoking section
LA FERIA — City commissioners voted this week to renew a special use permit for Valley Entertainment, an electronic gaming hall at 805 W. Business 83, after they learned the business had complied with a city regulation that it build a separate no-smoking section.
Mayor Steve Brewer said Wednesday the no-smoking regulation was put in place a year ago.
Gaming halls must apply to have their special use permits renewed once a year, Brewer said.
Valley Entertainment is the only such gaming hall in La Feria, Brewer said.
In other business, officials set dates of Aug. 10 and Sept. 14 to review the upcoming fiscal year’s tax rate and budget, with a deadline of Sept. 14 to pass the 2010-2011 city budget.
Officials expect to collect 95 percent of tax revenues in the coming year, Finance Director Maria Chavero said. The current budget was based on a tax levy of $1,250,289, she said.
A closed session to discuss proposed purchase or sale of real estate by the La Feria Industrial Development Corp. was tabled.
The city’s Independence Day celebration, delayed because of Hurricane Alex, was held on Saturday, City Manager Sunny Philip told commissioners.
