Warehouse fire in Rio Hondo across from school

Harlingen and Brownsville fire crews are both responding to a large warehouse fire in the outskirts of Rio Hondo off FM 106.

The fire is now under control but firefighters except to be battling it for the rest of the day. The blaze broke out in a large warehouse full of chemicals.

Two workers were outside of the warehouse at the time the fire broke out. No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire appears to be across from Las Yescas Elementary School. Los Fresnos School District Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar said district officials were informed around 12:55 p.m. of the fire. School buses were prepositioned immediately in case students needed to be evacuated.

No evacuations seem to be needed, Salazar said, who is currently outside of the school. Students will be released at their normal time.

Smoke from the fire can be seen from miles away.
