-HARLINGEN — A Harlingen man was arrested Saturday by Harlingen police on charges of burglary of a building, evading arrest and possession of a controlled substance.
Rafael Perez Perez-Cordova, 41, was arrested at 2:34 a.m., after an officer patroling the 400 block of East Tyler Avenue heard the sound of breaking glass.
The officer was on foot, checking area businesses and approached a hair salon that was adjacent to 402 E. Harrison Ave. and heard the sound coming from the rear of the building, police said.
The officer saw someone attempting to climb off the building’s roof and ordered the subject not to move, but the man ran back on the roof, police said.
Other police officers had surrounded the building and the man was seen running toward Fourth Street, police said.
The man was detained a short time later by the first officer in front of the building, police said.
After Perez-Cordova was arrested for evading detention or arrest, he was searched and a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance was found in his front left pocket, police said. The powder tested positive for cocaine, police said. Total weight of the cocaine was less than 1/10th of an ounce, police said.
On Sunday, Perez-Cordova was arraigned by Municipal Court Judge Michael Zanca who set bonds of: burglary of a building, a state jail felony, $10,000; possession of a controlled substance, a state jail felony, $10,000; evading arrest, a class A misdemeanor, $5,000.
-Police responded to a disturbance shortly after midnight Monday in the 600 block of East Filmore Avenue, where a man reportedly pulled a gun on a woman, police said.
A 21-year-old woman told police that as she was arriving at her home, Bruce Lee Manning Jr., opened the door, pointed a rifle at her stomach, and yelled at her to leave. The victim said Manning then grabbed her by the throat and shoved her from the house. The victim ran toward the street, and called police, Harlingen police said in a statement.
Manning was taken into custody without incident and taken to the city jail. The rifle was taken as evidence.
He was arraigned on Monday and bond was set at $525,000, police said.
-Police responded around 2 p.m. Sunday to a call about a shoplifter in custody at Sam Goody, a music store located in Valle Vista Mall in the 2000 block of West Expressway 83, HPD said.
Alberto Alexander, 48, of Harlingen, had been detained by store security and police arrested him, HPD said.
A store employee said she saw Alexander conceal four DVDs and a CD, total value of $98.96, then walk past open cash registers and out the door without paying for the items, which were recovered by store employees, police said.
Alexander was charged with theft, a Class B misdemeanor, and taken to city jail, police said. A records check showed Alexander had $1,556.80 in outstanding Municipal Court warrants, police said.
Alexander was arraigned on Monday and bond was set at $2,100 for the charge of theft.
-Police responded around 2:20 p.m. Sunday to disturbance call in the 600 block of North T Street, HPD said.
The police dispatcher had received information that a man, wearing a black T-shirt and khaki pants, was involved in the disturbance was standing outside with a knife, police said.
Police found and detained a man matching the description, identified as Ruben Vela.
The officer then spoke to the 21-year-old female victim, a Harlingen resident.
According to the victim, Vela was upset at her and aggressively grabbed her by the arm, causing pain, police said.
The victim stated that Vela then grabbed a glass jar of baby food from her hand and threw it at her while she was feeding her small children, police said.
The children were not hit by the glass jar, but were placed in danger of injury, police said.
Vela then left the bedroom, went into the kitchen, and grabbed a knife, police said. Vela yelled at the victims “that he wasn’t afraid of the cops,” while swinging the knife in front of him, police said.
Vela then went outside and waited for the police, HPD said. He was then taken into custody without incident and taken to city jail, police said.
Vela was arraigned on Monday. He was charged with assault/family violence, a class A misdemeanor, bond $5,000; two counts of endangering child, second degree felony, $50,000 bond on each count.
