Engagement Announcement

   Rudy M. Parast and his wife, Ann Roberts Parast, are delighted to announce the engagement of their daughter, Layla M. Parast, to Jay Bartroff of California.

   Layla Parast, 27, is a Ph.D. candidate in Biostatistics at Harvard University. She holds a Master's degree in Statistics from Stanford University and a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin. Her mother, who is retired, taught English for 14 years at TSTC and French for 10 years at Harlingen High School. Her father taught mathematics in Santa Maria ISD for 25 years and is currently a math teacher at Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas

   Jay Bartroff, 35, is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, and a B. A. in Applied Mathematics from U.C. Berkeley. The groom is the son of Jack and Barbara Bartroff of Coronado, California. His father, who is retired, was an orthodontist in San Diego, California. His mother, who is retired, was an interior designer.

   The couple met at Stanford University while the groom was a postdoctoral fellow there and the bride was earning her Master's degree. Their first date in 2006 began carpooling to a math conference in Berkeley, but ended up including a college football game, dinner, and a night on the town. Less than a year after they began dating, the groom was offered his current position in Los Angeles and the bride a position in the Ph.D. program at Harvard.  The bride plans to move to the West Coast following the wedding. 

    Jay and Layla are to be married October 23, 2011, by a friend of the groom, Dr. Larry Goldstein, at the SmogShoppe, a green event space in Los Angeles, California.
