San Benito teen killed in car crash
The San Benito school district’s students and staff Monday were mourning the death of a 14-year-old Miller Jordan Middle School student killed in a car crash that occurred Saturday.
Pedro Pugo was killed in the accident that occurred on U.S. Expressway 77/83 about 10 p.m. near Rancho Viejo, Brownsville police said.
The boy was in the vehicle with four other females, all juveniles, Brownsville police spokesman J.J. Trevino said.
He did not release the girls' ages, and declined to say who drove the car and whether the drive was of legal driving age.
One of the girls was released from the hospital Monday. The other three remain at the hospital in stable condition.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time,” Superintendent Antonio Limón said in a press release.
Miller Jordan Middle School Principal Rico Rodriguez said the eighth-grader “was very well liked by the student body.”
Trevino did not say whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
He said the case in still under investigation and charges could be filed.
Rodriguez said that students and staff members are collecting donations to help his family with funeral expenses.
The school district is offering counseling services to students and staff impacted by the student’s death, Rodriguez said.
