Principal hits boy with SUV, delays saying so

PERKASIE, Pa. — Police say a middle-school principal struck a high school student with her SUV at a crosswalk near Philadelphia, but didn't identify herself as the driver until dialing 911 later.

Pennridge Regional Police Chief David Mettin says the 15-year-old Pennridge High School student suffered head injuries and is in critical condition.

The chief says 66-year-old Margaret Kantes struck the student, stopped and stayed with emergency crews near the scene in Perkasie (PERK'-uh-see). Mettin says the principal didn't say she was the driver. She left and called police to identify herself 50 minutes after the accident.

Kantes says in a statement that she is ``personally devastated by what happened to this young man'' and is praying for his speedy recovery.
