Woman injured in SUV crash on expressway

HARLINGEN — A woman was hospitalized early Thursday after a one-vehicle accident on Expressway 77/83, city police said.

The 27-year-old Mercedes woman was driving a black Lincoln Navigator northbound in the middle lane on the expressway near the F Street exit, Harlingen Police Sgt. John Parrish said.

A tractor-trailer rig was traveling northbound in the left lane on the expressway and the 50-year-old driver began to make a lane change but then didn’t, Parrish said.

“The driver of the Navigator thought she was going to be hit, made an evasive action, lost control and struck a concrete barrier,” he said. “So there was no contact between the two vehicles. But the semi truck contributed to the accident by making an unsafe lane change.”

Although the trucker was not cited, the accident is still being investigated, Parrish said.

“It was a non-contact accident,” he said.

Two children, ages between 3 and 5, were in the Navigator with the driver, Parrish said.

“They were fine,” he said. “They were in (child safety) seats, they were later released to their grandmother,” Parrish said. “The female driver went to Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen with minor injuries. She was issued a citation for no driver’s license.”
