Master Chorale, South Texas Chorale and South Texas Festival Orchestra to perform Mozart Requiem
BROWNSVILLE,TEXAS - MARCH 16, 2011 - The music of Mozart’s “Requiem” will fill The Arts Center at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 27.
The concert will feature the university’s Master Chorale with the South Texas Chorale and the South Texas Festival Orchestra under the direction of Dianne Brumley.
It will also be the final performance for the South Texas Chorale.
“In choosing the ’Requiem’ by Mozart, I felt the magnificence of the music was the proper way to end our tenure of music making,”said Brumley. “Combining the voices of the South Texas Chorale with the voices of the Master Chorale and the South Texas Festival Orchestra in the Arts Center is a fitting tribute to all who have worked to make the South Texas Chorale a success.”
While she is stepping down as director of the South Texas Chorale, Brumley will continue to serve as director of the university’s Master Chorale and as a member of the faculty of the Department of Music.
Brumley has been directing the 80-voice South Texas Chorale since its creation 20 years ago.
“This organization would have never started or survived were it not for the dedication and drive of Dianne Brumley along with her selection of an extremely competent and equally dedicated board of directors,” said Dennis Mitchell, president of the chorale’s board of directors.
In 1991, the South Texas Chorale was created with the Harlingen High School Chorale and some 30 Harlingen vocalists jointly presenting selections of Handel’s “Messiah.”
From that origin the organization grew into the current addition known as South Texas Chorale with a full orchestra being added a few years later.
“It is with a great deal of sadness and regret that we close the door on this organization and it has been our pleasure to sing for our patrons for the past 20 years,” said Mitchell. “Our chorale members take pride in the excellence presented through our concerts and quality of reputation we have developed and demonstrated by the multiple invitations we have received to perform at the Texas Chorale Directors’ conventions, the Southwest Region of the American Chorale Directors’ convention and other venues.”
Tickets for the Masterworks concert are $17 for general admission and $5 for students with a current student identification.
Tickets are available at the box offices of the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium and The Arts Center or online at www.harlingenarts.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
