David Contereas: Happy texan

Life is good in the Rio Grande Valley for David Contreras Jr., he said.
A registered nurse in the Kleberg Cardiac Care Unit at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, he has worked at Valley Baptist for 17 years, Contreras said.
At Harlingen High School, he played football and ran in track and field events, he said.
After graduation at HHS, he began studying respiratory therapy at University of Texas-Brownsville, but then switched to nursing, he said. He earned associate’s and bachelor’s degrees at UTB.
He has had side jobs at Harlingen Medical Center, Valley Regional Medical Center, Brownsville Medical Center, now called VBMC-Brownsville, and home health care agencies, he said.
“I have also worked for other local hospitals and home health care companies, but always remanded loyal to Valley Baptist in Harlingen,” he said.
He and wife Bertha married in 1990, Contreras said.
“We have three beautiful kids,” he said.
His eldest son, David Contreras III, plays guitar and video games, Contreras said.
Stephanie, 12, enjoys sports such as basketball, softball and volleyball, Contreras said.
Derek, 3, enjoys everything that most 3-year-olds do, his proud father said.
In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking, fishing, riding a Jet Ski and surfing, Contreras said.
His family’s travels have been mostly limited to close-by attractions such as Six Flags and Sea World in San Antonio, he said.
“Sometimes we go to my daughter’s sports tournaments,” he said.
“I’m encouraging the kids to go into the medical field,” Conteras said.
“My sister Angelica ‘Angie’ Conteras is graduating as a doctor in May,” he said.
“I was born and raised here in the Valley,” Contreras said. “I like it here.”
