Water aerobics at the Harlingen Elks Lodge
Jump right in, the water's great! Just ask some of the Slim Down Challenge contestants.
They discovered that working out in the Harlingen Elk's Lodge swimming pool with a water aerobics instructor was an excellent non-impact way to build strength, reduce body fat, and increase flexibility during the heat of the summer.
From water aerobic exercises to water walking exercises the Harlingen Elk's Lodge classes focused on both cardiovascular benefits and building strength. Through their Slim Down Challenge journey contestants have strived to reach new levels of fitness. The added benefit of training in water made their workouts safe and fun without impacting their joints. “It took the stress off of my joints but still gave me a good overall workout,” contestant Reva Ayala said.
The body is almost weightless in the water, making it ideal for increasing lower body strength, power and agility through power jumps and exercises. The exercise involves various body movements sometimes in a rhythmic style and certain kinds of dance steps.
Contestants liked the idea of taking a dip in cool water on the hot summer days. Besides getting a total body exercise, they enjoyed the freshness and coolness of the water. Eduardo Cruz said the water areobics at the Elks Lodge was a good change of pace from walking. “It was very low impact compared to walking which was good for my knees,” he said.
“Contestants enjoyed the classes offered at the Harlingen Elks Lodge," said Marcia Kitten, Valley Morning Star marketing director. "It was a great opportunity for Slim Down Challenge participants to get a great workout, and still keep cool and be comfortable even when the mercury was rising."
