One of Sea Turtle, Inc.’s favorite residents, MJ the Loggerhead, will be moving from South Padre Island to the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park, part of the Dallas Zoo.
The blue-eyed MJ originally stranded on South Padre Island in January 2004, weighing less than a pound.
She is missing parts of all four of her flippers due to predator attacks and because of this is a non-releasable turtle.
She has a colorful history at Sea Turtle Inc. on the Island, and is known for being one of the organization’s feistiest turtles.
She first resided at the Gladys Porter Zoo, but was relocated to Sea Turtle Inc. after a few months.
MJ was given back to Sea Turtle Inc. after she had eaten all the aquarium fish at the Brownsville zoo, Sea Turtle Inc. staff member Tiffany Anderson said.
Sea Turtle Inc. staff members said they are sad to see her go, but are exciting about her new home. Some of the staff toured the Dallas aquarium in May, where the display is larger that her current home and will allow visitors to view the turtle from many different angles.to
MJ will be transferred on Wednesday, July 17, and the public is invited to stop by Sea Turtle Inc. on July 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a special farewell gathering.
“Please join us in celebrating her future in a beautiful home and showing our appreciation for all the wonderful times we have had with her at Sea Turtle Inc.,” Anderson said. “We will miss her dearly. Let’s send her off with love, seafood popsicles and seafood jello cake.”
