I have an extensive amount of jobs that constantly cross my mind but there are only two that I would have to consider calling my "dream job". One day I dream of owning a restaurant in San Clemente, California. It is a beach and the environment is soothing and peaceful. I would like to have a restaurant because what else do people love more than food? I would like for my customers to feel at home and have them so relaxed that they forget about the rest of their day, but this is only half of my dream job. The other half is to one day have a child, a child that I would love, guide and teach to be strong, so strong that one day after I am gone and the world has changed they will prevail and make their life worth living over again and again and they will forever leave their mark in time.
Someone was very lucky.

Grimsell’s Seed Company has been a fixture in downtown Harlingen for generations. In the 1970s E. D. Giffen retired and management of Grimsell’s passed to his son, Donald E. Giffen. Donnie was the face of Grimsell’s for almost 40 years. It was he who acquired the properties on either side of the original building and added in a nursery to supplement the seed business. Today, it is Donnie’s sister, Carol Mayfield, who oversees the business with a very capable team of employees who manage the day-to-day operations. These include Jerry Abbot, George Luna, Martin Villanueva, and Basilio Torres. Basilio has been with Grimsell’s 47 years and George about 30 years. Grimsell’s continues to sell feed and seed the old-fashioned way, offering garden seeds, vegetable seeds, and some flower seeds by the ounce, as well as bird seed, fertilizers, and minerals by the pound, They stock a broad selection of insecticides and fungicides, potting soils and planting mixes blended for the Valley, bedding plants, garden plants, shade trees, vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, and more. The nursery is well-known for the huge variety of roses they stock each winter (2000 plants) and, in the summer, a huge variety of 500-800 fruit trees, vines and grapes. Over the years Grimsell’s has grown and expanded from their primary building at 213 W. Monroe. The nursery now occupies half a city block (300’x140’). This includes the 1921 Templeton building on the west end of the block and a large garden area on the west end, where the popular Arcadia Theatre once stood. Buried beneath the grass, according to local legend, are seats and other remnants of the theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 1970. Today the inviting area designated at the Arcadia Gardens boasts palms and plants of all types, the tallest flagpole in South Texas (125’) and two recently-acquired military macaws named RK and Dia, in honor of the old theatre. Grimsell’s other avian residents include a double yellow parrot named Paco, two Eurasian collared doves, and two or three dozen parakeets. An open air structure next to Arcadia Gardens in the remnants of the structure that once housed popular downtown businesses including City News & Drug and the City Barber Shop. And, after losing the roof to a fire in 2006, and the front façade to a windstorm in 2009, the front room of the original building at 213 W. Monroe was reworked into a fenced courtyard, following a design provided by architects with the Texas Main Street Program.
