Woman shot near Alton

NEAR ALTON -- Authorities continue to investigate a shooting Monday evening that sent one woman to the hospital.

Jeanette Canales Luna, 40, was sitting in the back seat of a car travelling near FM 681 and Los Ebanos Road about 6:40 p.m. Monday, said Sheriff Lupe Treviño.

A male acquaintance sitting next to Luna in the back seat apparently shot her once in the chest, Treviño said. She was taken to an HEB grocery store in Mission, where she met by an ambulance and taken to the hospital for treatment. 

Luna is in stable condition and expected to recover from her injuries, Treviño said.

"She is going to be fine," he said.

Deputies have been in contact with Luna's alleged shooter via telephone, but have yet to recover the vehicle or the weapon used in the shooting, the sheriff said.

Whether any criminal charges will be filed in the case remains to be seen, as deputies continue to investigate whether the shooting was an accident, Treviño said.

"We know who pulled the trigger," he said. "We're looking for him. He has not made himself available."
