Yes, I strongly agree that society judges your appearance. These days if you wear black all of a sudden you’re “Emo”, if you wear baggy pants you’re “ghetto” if you shop at the mall you’re “rich”. Kids these days only worry about appearance. We’re full of materialistic people; all they care about is how you look, dress, and what kind of car and house you have. We should not judge a book by its cover. That person that you thought was “ugly” or a “loser” could end up being your best friend one day, or even your husband. You never know what will happen in the future, so it’s best for us not to judge any one and like them for who they are.

Larissa Silva- Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Yes I think society depends to much on personal appearance because of how people are always wanting to feel accepted by others. And some of the people would go through getting tattoos and getting piercings just to feel accepted by there peers and some would change there style to also feel accepted by there peers because they judge too much on there looks.

Lee Roy Jasso, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Personal appearance is only relied on the critical people who believe so. I think not, because I like to be able to tell who or what a person is by the way they present themselves. I think personal appearance is an amazing asset in this life, but only when people are the way they want to be, not what other people expect them to be. People tend to judge way to much; that causes tension. Be who you want to be, not what people expect to see.

Bianca Jaramillo, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I believe society does focus on the appearance of one. If a person walks around with tattoos, baggy, bald, and ghetto wardrobes, everyone thinks they’re all gangsters, but they don’t see that maybe that person is real smart and just likes to be dressed up like that and they judge them. But if a person that is well dressed and has a nice car and is nice looking, everyone thinks he is a real good person that doesn’t do anything when some times they’re the worst ones. Looks are another thing. If a girl is beautiful almost every guy wants to talk to her and she is really popular, but if she is a chubby girl not so good looking with poor clothes people will just look at them up and down and will laugh. Society does focus on looks.

Danny Millan, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that the society relies too much on physical activities. In the past, they treat the colored people a lot different; they were treated like slaves. In some places, I’ve seen people being treated bad just because they are from other countries. I’ve seen on TV people in real life being treated unfairly because of their accent or looks. I think they should let everyone live where ever they want…and this also haves to stop.

Alberto Salas, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I judge people sometimes, and I know its wrong, but I don’t judge people who are black; I respect them. They judge me because I’m white and because I’m small, but I really don’t care. Like people who are freaks I judge them a little because sometimes they look scary! There are some freaks that are cool. I judge girls who wear too much makeup. Now I’m not going to judge people too much.

Perla Salinas, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

My opinion is that people misjudge other human beings just by the way that person looks. Like for example if that person has tattoos or piercings or stuff in that nature then someone might say “you look weird” I think you should get to know that person from the inside you know. Like what is their personality? Have you ever heard of that lizard man? He looks weird right, but he is a nice guy.

Chase Lopez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Many people judge each other every day. I don’t think its right to be criticizing people before they even get to know them. I think criticism should not come from appearance I think it should come from there actions, there behavior towards you, and there wrong doing. I think that when you criticize people, it hurts there feelings. Some people just don’t care about people’s emotions it can hurt them. I think people should think before they speak and keep there hurtful comments to themselves.

Elizabeth Sandoval, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

In my opinion society judges people by the way they look too much. I use to be like that until the day I needed help reaching something off the top shelf at the store. I saw a man turn a corner with baggy pants and tattoos all over his body. He looked at me and asked, “You need some help buddy?” I was shocked. I never expected that from someone who looked like that. From then on I never judged someone by the way they look. Sometimes the people you think are bad are the nicest people.

Ricardo Chavez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

No I don’t think its okay to judge about people because I think it’s not about the outside what we wear. I think it’s about the inside the feelings of people and their motions. The other thing is that it depends how they talk to you because what if they don’t respect if they do its okay. I think it is bad to talk about people because a person wouldn’t like that other people are talking about you just because of how you dress. I dress like a cholo, always with Dickies, muscle shirts and Dickies shirts. I used to have square diamond earrings on my both ears. I have a tattoo on my both hands. On the right hand I have my first name and the 3points. On my left hand I have my last name.

Noel E. Gonzalez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Well society judge’s people by the way people look because of what they wear. It’s an even way because if people wear black with piercings they shouldn’t judge others. Everyone is going to judge you. If you wear baggy pants you’re going to get judge. The people will think this guy will probably get me in some trouble; so it only depends what you wear. That’s why you should wear what you want, but you should think how you would like to be treated like.

Josue Acevedo, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

In society everyone depends on looks. They discriminate a lot of people by the way they dress or the way they even talk, but more of their color. If you’re wearing a lot of make-up and wearing mini skirts and a spaghetti shirt the people that see you are going to think that you’re something that you’re not. I think they shouldn’t be judging other people because they wouldn’t like it if some other people would talk about them. I sometimes just say things like “look at that girl that dress doesn’t look good on her,” but that’s all. If you have tattoos or not properly dressed and go to a bank to find work they will not hire you because of the way you dress and the way you look.

Judith Hernandez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think society does judge people by there appearance, and it’s not right. You shouldn’t judge someone on what they wear or how they look. It’s bad that everyone judges everyone and the few people that don’t judge are the people who get judged the most. Most people expect everyone to be perfect and if there not they would be excluded out of there little gang. Its messed up on how rude people can be just because someone is a little different. I was always told different is good, but society always has to think other wise. People can’t even get a job unless they are close to perfect. This means they can’t have tattoos, piercings, gages, or anything of that sort. People shouldn’t judge on there appearance or anything in general. They should get off their high horse and learn to love a person’s personality.

Linsey de la Rosa, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think it’s not nice to make fun of someone’s appearance, because some people are very religious, others parents are strict about how their children dress, or other people don’t care and dress however they want. It’s not nice to judge people with tattoos because most of the time people get tattoos that mean a lot to them, some tattoos symbolize something to them, but tattoos don’t always mean something bad as other people think they do. It’s not nice to make fun of people who have piercing because sometimes they get them for the fun of it, sometimes they get them because they think they look pretty in them, or because their parents are against them and they want to get them angry. I don’t think it’s nice to make fun of people who are overweight and want to dress how they think they look pretty and don’t think it looks bad on them. I don’t think it’s nice to be rude to people how are overweight. I think some overweight people look nice when they dress up, but for the overweight people that don’t dress up I would suggest not to care but don’t listen to what other people say.

Ruby Garcia, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that appearance is important but is good to try to recognize look at us really good in a formal way.

Diana Villegas, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

A lot of people judge everyday, every minute, every second. I shouldn’t decide if it’s right or wrong because everyone does it. I get judged sometimes and sometimes I don’t even know it. I judge too. I think it’s normal because everyone does it. I know its wrong, but I’m not going to decide if it’s right or wrong. Sometimes you don’t even realize that you are judging someone on how they look. It just comes natural to everyone.

Javier Torres, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think people should not judge people because they are different inside. They have feelings some people are real kind. There really nice and cool people out there, we should just get along with everyone. I have seen a lot of people getting judged they by the way they look or the way they dress. People do no care because all they ever do is judge you the minute they see you. They judge you by your face, body, if you are smart or if you’re not smart. I just want people to not judge because they might not like it if someone else judge them. Judging people can make people fight and then it will be worst, people around the world are killing them self.

Selena N. Villegas, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think society does not rely on the person’s physical appearance. For example, skin color because if you’re white it doesn’t matter, but if you’re black it does because you’re treated with no respect and many people would think you’re a criminal just because of your skin color. Another reason is because how they dress. Professional business people go to work all dressed up with a suit. An unprofessional person would go to work with all tattoos saying gang names like east and west coast with baggie shorts. Those are the ones who don’t get the job. I think it’s wrong that people do this and it’s not fair to others.

Jesus Martinez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think today’s society does rely on personal appearance. Due to the fact that I myself have been judged many times by my personal appearance to others. Yes I may have tattoos, an earring, and a few scars, but that is no reason to automatically assume the worse of me. I have also been judged by athletic teams as a “wanna-be” just because my appearance to them is prep, yet I choose to be around all the troubled individuals. Adults see me in my neighborhood with tats on my arms, and an earring, and clothes; all wangos (loose). I’m not a troubled kid, but a lot of people tend to assume the worse by my rude behavior, the slur (attitude) in my tone, and my serious image to my face complex. My tats are not able to be seen on a daily basis or even at all, but around my neighborhood I tend to wear a lot of muscle shirts outside. Therefore my markings are visible, but not anything that represents a negative meaning. All these facts I am typing are coming from my personal experiences, and I hope that if someone in today’s society reads this they will hopefully think twice before they automatically judge a person. People judge me when they have it made, but I think to myself “Forget what they think and forget what they say. What do they know bout me? They know nothing bout JP” .One problem after another, yet this goes on endlessly.

Jonathan Diaz, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Most of society judge’s people on the way they look because they do not take the time to get to know the person. If some one took the time to get to know a certain person or anyone at all, they would see how the person really is on the inside and what the person really thinks. They should get to know the person and see what the person overcome. For example, like the kind of hardships they have faced, but people do not care because all they ever do is judge you right the minute they see you no matter what race you are, your weight or weather where you came from. They should take the time to get to know you or any person instead of judging them right away. People from our society- please do not judge people anymore at least take the time to get to know them.

Katherine Cottongim, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that society does judge people by their physical appearance and I don’t think that it is the right thing to do. The reason I think its not right is because I could look like a really big trouble maker or ghetto or weird but I know that I'm a really smart and hard working person. I have a few friends who dress really ghetto but they are way smarter than me and people sometimes judge them because of how they dress. Also if people have a lot of tattoos they will probably get judged and not be able to work at a certain place.

Daniel Ramirez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that society should not judge people by the way they look because everybody is different. Society should not judge people by the way they look because we are all different on the outside. Today’s society judges people on the way they look like. For example, if they are wearing saggy pants and look all gangsters, they think they are bad people. I once witnessed my sister’s husband getting rejected by the way he was dressed on by the tattoo he had on his arm. He went and asked for a job and filled out a three page application and immediately got rejected. I think that if they like to wear gangster wardrobes, let them be the way they like to be and not judge them.

Juan Espinoza, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that society does rely too much on physical appearance. Many people judge and are judged on the way that they look. I don’t think that society should focus on the physical appearance of people. People should focus on what’s on the inside because that’s what matters. Just because a person is wearing baggy jeans and a baggy shirt, doesn’t mean they kill or anything. A lot of people in this world are stereotyped and it shouldn’t be that way. Appearances aren’t important. We should all get along and worry about how we look.

Maria Rubio, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

No, I think that your appearance should not matter to other people. If other people want to talk to you, knowing that you have glasses, braces, or even tight pants they would talk to you. People should talk to them because how the way they are, they might be a cool, funny person and good to hang around with. So society these days should not judge people for the way they walk, talk, dress, etc., they should get to know you a little better before they judge you.

Karina Zamora, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Yes I do believe society relies on physical appearance way to much, because a teacher can’t go teach a class with a tattoo exposed to any student or staff in the campus because automatically they assume that she/he has done something wrong or is a sign of trouble. In every classroom they single people out by labeling them (prep, emo punk, fresa, ghetto). I honestly think that society shouldn’t judge people by the physical appearance its wrong and sort of like racism.

Mariana Zuniga, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

My opinion of looks madder in society, that is not ok because every one has they’re own form to look. I have seen some people that will dress all black to school in a hot winter, but think in there side you don’t know what she or he is going through or they could only be like that to have attention. Other people for example putting there pants down because they will look cool maybe because if they don’t people will not be scared of them and they will not respect them. If you jug them in how they look you will hurt there fillings so think what you could be doing.

Miguel Murillo, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that physical appearance matters because a guy dressing all gangster with tattoos, they’re going to dislike him and tell him to go away. All of the people that dress right with proper dress/outfit might contract him immediately without questioning his education. I think they should not interest in the way they dress but in the education that they have.

Javier Ochoa, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Yes I do think that society relies too much on physical appearance. What I think about all this is that it doesn’t matter how people dress in their own way or look from the outside; I would call that nonsense. What really matters is how the person really is from the inside, the way they are with others, if they get along with people. I’m guessing it would be kind of different from the way you usually think. You’d be surprised how people you think are different when in reality they’re just like me and you.

Jope Espino, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that physical appearance matters because many people dressed all gangster because they might think that their in a gang or something. They also see the way you act on job interviews and they might think that he doesn’t want this job so bad. Societies also see you’re acts.

Ulises Calzada, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Yes I do believe society focuses too much on the way people look. My dad has tattoos on his arms, and when he had a job as a cashier his boss made him block his tattoos. My dad has hair up to the middle of his forehead, but he brushes it back and it doesn’t look as long. My dad changed his style from baggy clothing to normal fitting clothing. He started shopping at Aeropostal and Hollister because he says more people don’t really want people who dress in baggy clothes, more people want people who dress more name brand clothing. When my family goes to Indiana we feel weird because we are some of the only Hispanics around. People look at us like “there’s some Mexicans, hide your stuff”. If we were to try to get a job over at Indiana and be competing with a local person we probably wouldn’t get the job because of the way we look. That’s my opinion of this and I know many people will agree with me

Arnulfo Lucio, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

To society I think it matters because if you act mean or you show bad manners I don’t think they are going to get the job or whatever they going to achieve. But I think that is a bad idea to judge a people by the way they talk, dress, or act. It matters more about their feelings or how they are inside. People might get their workers just by the way they look; like there’s a skinny, pretty boy and there’s this fat, ugly boy. Of course they’re going to pick the skinny pretty one, but they will have to check about how smart they are or how they work. I think they should not care how they dress; just how they can achieve.

Brandon Nunez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Society focuses too much on looks. Some of the people think that just because they have ugly dresses, they can’t hang out with them. I think that’s not cool because they all have the education. Sometimes they have good personalities, but we don’t know because the first thing we do is judge that person and we don’t get to meet them because of our attitude. I think society should focus on personality factors rather than their looks …….

Christian Gomez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

When you go to a very important job interview, you have to look good. You can’t go dressed with very baggy pants and a muscle shirt, or with your arms all tattooed; they won’t want to hire you. That’s wrong because what if he’s a very hard worker and can bring very great things to that business, but they’ll never know because they didn’t hire him just because of what he was wearing. That’s why I believe that society should focus more on what’s on the inside than judging you from the outside.

Jacinda Trevino, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that physical appearance maters because if they look at you and they see that you have a lot of tattoos they think you are a gangster. If people see you look a perfect they will hire you right away I don’t like to see people with the gangster pants they look firkin stupid. Girls on the other hand they will get a job very very very very fast because they always look pretty.

Christian Martinez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

To society I think it matters because if you act mean or you show bad manners I don’t think they are going to get the job or whatever they going to achieve. But I think that is a bad idea to judge a people by the way they talk, dress, or act. I matters more about their feelings or how they are inside. I think that should not care how they dress just how they can achieve.

Brandon Nunez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that when someone dresses like a homey and goes to an important job, he would not get the job because they may think he does drugs and other bad stuff. I think society should not judge people by their clothes, their hair, and looks.

Miguel Martinez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Of course the society relies too much on physical appearance. The society should not judge you by the way you look; just like u shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Even though the society shouldn’t judge you by the way you look, you have to understand that they are. So try to dress and look the way you want other people to judge you as. The society shouldn’t judge anyone by the way they look, case they don’t know what inner strengths they have. Everyone is different, and every one has a special ability.

Luis Lujan, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that society does rely on looks now days. People don’t know when to think that looks don’t really matter on a person. Like somebody could look ugly, but could be the nicest person that you have ever met. But then there can be some other person that look so pretty and can be the meanest person. “Looks don’t matter”, yet too many people don’t believe in that phrase. People shouldn’t judge others by the way they look; they shouldn’t judge anybody at all. People can look at a person and say “Oh my gosh, that person looks like a weirdo, or a loser.” People do that now and it hurts the person that they are talking about. People shouldn’t do that to others because what if somebody is also doing it behind your back and you don’t even know it. Appearances don’t matter on anybody, that’s my opinion, but I don’t know if others will follow it.

Alyssa Aguilar, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that the society pays women more when they are skinny and men more when they are fuller. If you show up to an interview with ripped pants, messed up hair and tattoos, you probably won’t be able to get the job because the interviewer wouldn’t take you seriously. Maybe if you show up with a clean cut and regular clothes and covered all the tattoos that show, then you will probably have a better chance at getting the job. I also believe that the way you dress is the way your behavior will be.

Jacob Villarreal, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Society does rely too much on their appearance because people are so selfish now days. If a manager has to make a choice between a pretty girl and a more qualified girl he will pick the prettier one because he likes her more. Even though the other girl would have made a better worker for the company and would have made more money and helped out more, it’s possible that the less qualified is busy by filing her nails. You should always dress appropriately to work and show up prepared instead of showing up in a mini skirt and trying to catch boy’s attention. That’s why I think that people rely too much on looks because they think it will get them far in life when it won’t get them anywhere.

Salomon Pena III, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

The looks of society matter because they thing the ugly people don’t need a job. If girls are fat they usually don’t get a job because of how they look. So people should not be judged by the physical appearance. Rely now on how you are on the inside. When someone dresses like all weird and stuff they think they don’t know how to work. What really matters is what’s on the inside.

Jorge Gutierrez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Yes, I do believe that society focuses too much on the way we look. We skaters don’t care on other people. We just love to skate and we knock out people if they tell us on the way we look. Society gives too much opinion on clothes. People shouldn’t give opinions on other people’s clothes because you would only hurt their feelings. People feel bad when some makes fun of them. Who cares were you buy your clothes at least you have clothes to wear. Everybody can’t dress the same that’s why everybody has their own style.

Jesus Garcia, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think some people from our society do make their judgments based on looks and physical appearance because some businesses don’t want to have people looking like they just got them out a trash can, but they want the people that look like they have loads of experience  and knows what they’re doing. We shouldn’t do that because you never know what they can do. You never know how good a person with experience can be. Some end up with torn up shirts and baggy pants, but some people that are called “Mr. or Mrs. Perfect” might not have the experience at all. That is why people should not judge people by their looks.

Mateo Valdez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

To society I think it matters because if you act mean or you show bad manners I don’t think they are going to get the job or whatever they going to achieve. But I think that is a bad idea to judge a people by the way they talk, dress, or act. I matters more about their feelings or how they are inside. People might get their workers just by the way they look like If theirs a skinny pretty lady and theirs this fat ugly lady of course their going to pick the skinny pretty one, but they will have to check about how smart they are or how they work. I think that should not care how they dress just how they can achieve.

Graciela Puente, Weslaco East High School

I think that society does rely on looks now days. People don’t know when to think that looks don’t really matter on a person. Society judges people by their physical appearance when they shouldn’t be. It affects us in a certain way because we don’t all dress the same, to society our appearance matters a lot. The way you dress to an appointment and the way you do your hair, they’re just discriminating their own way of dress code. I believe society should not criticize people by their looks, maybe because they have a great inner strength in them, but because they judge their appearance they wouldn’t know what they really think or feel inside them. It’s a loss of society workers, which only affects them. They shouldn’t compare physical appearance to people’s beliefs or looks.

Vanessa Ramirez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Yes, I think society relies too much on physical appearance. I think we shouldn’t rely too much on how we dress and act, because deep down inside of us, we’re someone different. No one knows that because we just judge everyone without even knowing them first. I know I do it sometimes, but I don’t like it so I try not to judge people by their looks or the color of hair or the way they dress or even talk. We should stop judging everyone, and get along, because words do hurt people; even though you might not tell them in their faces, but they do have ears to hear. Jobs should stop judging people that try and get a job, but they can’t because how they dress and what they have. All of that really doesn’t matter. Stop judging people from the outside, because in the inside they’re probably someone nice and trustworthy. This is just my opinion on society judging people. Remember what goes around comes around! So be careful what you say!

Claudia Lucio, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I do think society should rely on appearance because if you can’t even take care of your self how are you going to have a job or. Maybe somebody has there pants down low and a baggy shirt, and you think oh this guy is going to rob me. But that’s just my opinion, but if you see a man with a nice shirt and some dressy pants and you think man that’s the kind of guy I want to hire. That’s the kind of guy I would want to hire not the man with the piercings and tattoo's and has his pants really low.

Cesar Cano, Weslaco East High School

In society everyone depends on looks. Looks don’t matter to me but to companies it means everything, who cares if they have a good background, it all depends on looks. Who cares if they wear name brand clothes, to much make-up, or they look ugly, pretty, they all deserve the same respect. People should never judge others by appearance. I was raised by parents who would never judge someone on their appearance. The way they raised me is the way that I will raise my children. No one should ever judge the way other people look, the way they are is they way they are going to stay no matter what. Physical appearances should never be looked in the wrong way everyone is their own person in their own way. Companies rather just go for skinny women who are skinny or pretty. The ones who are always flirting with the boss, they’ll all be going down. The ones who got rejected by that company will work in a bigger company they’ll be the boss’s of the ones that took their jobs.

Alisha Garza, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think society does rely on physical appearance because most attractive girls are friends with other attractive girls for the attention that they want, and they wouldn’t really want to hang out with another group of girls that are punkish looking people just because of what they wear and how they look. I noticed that many people make fun of other people just because of the way they look, dress, and the people they hang out with. Especially like dating, the attractive girls for example cheerleaders mostly go out with the football players.

Esteban Gonzalez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Society today still judges people for everything. I have sisters that have tattoos and piercings and people in our society judge them. If they’re showing people their art forms, people our saying they’re freaks, not responsible or can’t hack life! Society doesn’t mean anything to me because those that judge others really don’t do anything else better to do in life. Honestly, I was once one of those pathetic people, but I realized judging others is not going to give me my education or let me go forward in life. It’s hard for some people to get jobs today in our community because the managers are to busy judging those that applied for the way they dress or something else, but they chose to hire the ones that look nice and are sweet talking them. Really, all the sweet talk is just bull and like they say those you think that look all good and responsible are those that are more likely to screw up. Society today needs to stop because I thought all this judging was done along time ago.

People judge me because my color or what I wear! I mean come on it’s my life; I can wear whatever I want. Just because I’m a Mexican, doesn’t mean you can put me in a lower level or that I can talk Spanish. I always prove someone wrong that I can work hard and achieve my goal. I am what I am and nobody could change that about me! I just love being me and myself only!! If you are that kind to judge real quick, just walk up to me and say “Hi,” and after that you judge my real life. All you have to do is just talk to me!

Stephanie Lozano, Weslaco East High School

I think the society does judge every person by how they look because every person is different. Like my friend judges me by my cover he tells me by the way I look I look like if I would be the neighborhood bully, but I’m not like that. I’m always calm, nice, and some times when they get rowdy with me I would tell them something, but other than that I’m friendly. I don’t judge people by how they look. I’m friendly to everybody that’s why I have a lot of friends. There’s people that I do judge those that I don’t know that much and those that are being all hater with me. At school, I hang around with a lot of different people, but the people that I know are the ones that I hang around with the most, my homeboys from center point my neighborhood. Those are the people that I hang around with the most. You shouldn’t judge a person by how they look.

Eddie Gutierrez, Weslaco East High School

For me it doesn't matter if people tell me stuff, I tell them stuff back. I really don’t care; I know who I am and that’s what counts. I think that’s how every should be except for the telling back stuff. Just ignore what other people say about you because you’re the only one that knows yourself more just be happy for who you are and don’t act like someone your not.

Enrique Moreno Jr., Weslaco East High School

I think that the society is very judgmental because people tend to judge anybody with tattoos, piercings, and the way they dress. Like preppy people, everybody judges them because they are the one that act all that, but in reality you should get to know them before you even judge someone by the way they look or act. Skaters are the ones that get in trouble and skip class…..they aren’t like that. A lot of people judge me because I don’t like African Americans, they can be the biggest jerk you can ever meet, but some are cool. So, before you judge get to know them.

Gissel Gomez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Society does judge people in their physical appearance sometimes in a positive judgment and sometimes in a negative judgment. Sometimes there are people that have many marks on their body and people automatically think they are going to cause trouble, but they might have put the tattoos for a meaning. There are also kids that are made fun of because they have collar shirts with khakis, but those kids might be the smartest in the class. There are other people that do not judge the people around them like me; I look at their personality instead of their physical features that’s how I have all my friends beside me. There might be a girl that is very shy and everyone thinks she is weird, but if you go talk to her she might be the nicest girl you will ever meet. If you are going to judge people try talking to them to see their true self.

Alberto Ojeda, Weslaco East High School

Well I think that people are mean and rude to other people just because they have tattoos or other stuff that is what people do know a day’s society has gone down hill since I remember.

Chase Lopez, Weslaco East High School

Yes people now a days judge other people by the way they dress, tattoos, or anything they have will not look nice for a boy or girl, everybody has there own way of living. Nobody is perfect, but I Judge myself by the way they look and I shouldn’t do that; because you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover you wouldn’t like you if they just started judging you out of nowhere. Society isn’t doing a good about picking on people by the way they look, skin color, dress, or tattoos or past. I just think no one just the right to judge if god doesn’t judge you. People judge everyday not knowing if that hurts that person feelings or anything it’s the way of life they say.

Karina Gutierrez, Weslaco East High School

I think society judges people by their appearance and not by their skills or how they are in the inside. I think people should be judged by what’s inside not what’s outside. Some people don’t care if you are dumb or smart, but admire you only for your beauty. I know somebody that does that, but I can’t give out that information. Some people change their appearance just to bend in with others to look cool. In the 1800’s white people judge people if they were black or brown. A phase I heard one day was no one is prefect. Some people do get paid for they look, like models, celebrities, and movie stars .this my answer to that question what is yours?

Julio Chavez, Weslaco East High School

Yes I think society does judge people by the way they look and the way they dress. I think it's wrong to judge people because you could make them feel bad and make them want to beat you up or have problems. Well, I don’t judge people I think it is not good to do that.

Roy Pena, Weslaco East High School

Yes I think that society is very critical about the way we look and present ourselves  because if you were to interview someone to work in your facility with lots of tattoos or someone who has had a stable job or someone who has had to been fired from many jobs. And also would you hire someone who has a muscle shirt or someone who comes neatly to a job interview. Also image is everything when you see a cute girl and her chubby friend the only time you talk to the chubby friend is when you need help on a math problem. And for one our president is the first African American president why because of the way he looked because of his skin color.

Alan Hernandez, Weslaco East High School

People shouldn’t judge other people by their looks but by their experiences and background I think that’s what counts, because this world needs hard workers and good people no matter how they look. Also they should judge people by the way they look sometimes because some jobs look for that and that kind of behavior is worldwide. Other people have other different views of what they see in people. People categorize and that’s human nature. I’m with and against this topic.

Shannon Leah Valdez, Weslaco East High School

I think that society depends on appearances to much now. Like for example if a person with their body covered in tattoos would go to a job interview he probably wouldn’t get the job. For the simple reason that he has tattoos and doesn’t look clean or looks like a criminal. It’s kind of the same with a black person. When most people see a black person the only thing that goes through their mind is that he is a criminal. When in fact it’s not true. Not all people are like that some of them want to work and get paid so they can support for their families or themselves. It goes the same with girls it’s like now in offices they only hire good looking women 2 have around them all day while they are at work so check them out and hit on them. But if people realized that looks isn’t everything it would be a better place on this planet well that’s my opinion.

Jonathon Hernandez, Weslaco East High School

I believe that society does focus on physical appearance of a person. It all starts with people who judge others before they even meet them because of the way they look and dress. Therefore those people being judged felt pressured and just start doing crazy stuff and commits suicide, there are people that just judge just to make them feel bad. They also do it just to look cool with there friends just to be messing around. I think those people need to get a life because they wouldn’t like it done to them and when they do it to them they get all mad and want to start fighting and telling you worse things.

I believe that society relies too much on physical appearance. Like when people go to an interview dressed with baggy pants and earrings all over the place they won’t hire you because they will judge you and think that you don’t do a good job. Mostly everyone judges people but the ones doing the judging are also being judged by other people. If you walk into the class room and you are dressed with tight pants and eyeliner people will start saying that you are emo and that you’re scary, but people still haven’t even got to know that person and they are already judging him on how he looks, that’s the problem here in the world, why can’t people be charming. For example, the other day my dad’s friend went to an interview for a very important job and he went dressed with basketball shorts and a muscle shirt. Later on in the day they called him and they told him that he didn't get the job. He went to my dad’s house and asked him why he didn’t get the job and my dad told him that it was because he was dressed like he was going go work out. If people didn't judge anyone the world would be a better place there wouldn’t be as much violence. Back in the days white people judged African Americans because of there color of there skin and that created a lot of problems.

Luis Cabrales, Weslaco East High School

Physical appearance does matter in some places. We've all heard the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover!” It’s the same thing as to a human; we don’t know them from the inside and we don’t know their talents and we judge them for how they look. People don’t have work because they have tattoos and if they have work and they have a tattoo they need to cover them so that when a person enters to buy something he or she  won’t be scared. Just because they have a tattoo people get scared because almost all the people that were in jail have tattoos and people think they are bad, but why judge them just because of that maybe they were bad people, but some people change. Like there are some girls that judge the person that is in love with them just because how they look, but they think that by what they wear they are, but they are not because they could be different from the outside, but they don’t know them by the inside. Society should not judge people for there physical appearance.

Gustavo Nieto, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

In some places physical appearances does matter. When some people go and look for jobs the manager does not always hire them because they have tattoos, their color of skin, the way of clothes they are wearing or even the way they talk and walk. Some places that are hiring are so specific of what they want or the people they want to work in the place. There are jobs that don’t rely on the people’s physical appearances which make the job better and the person more confident. In schools, the physical appearances do matter because there are people that won’t talk to others that are not in the same social level. Some students care to look their best and for their friends to look the same if they’re too ugly they won’t talk to them. There are students that if the others don’t have money, the best clothes, and the best material things they have no reason to talk to you. There are other students that don’t care about anything just that the person they are talking to are fun to be around and gets along with the rest. They are judging the way you dress, eat, live, or what they are driving or how much money they have. Society shouldn’t care so much about physical appearances because that’s not what matters. What matters the most is what they have learned and what they can show others around them. Society is making a mistake in criticizing the people because not everybody thinks that the physical appearances matters to be the best in this world. Personally, I don’t judge people of their physical appearances because to me judging them is just wrong. I don’t like people doing it to me; I don’t like doing it to others. People are expressing what they are feeling and nobody else can feel the feeling they are feeling. To me, if the person has a good mind and is planning to work hard their physical appearance should not matter at all.

Azucena Basurto, Weslaco East High School

I really don't believed that society realize too much on physical appearance because I don't pay attention about how people dressed or what people use. I think that society is doing good about looking at physical appearance because it is important to look great when you are in a meeting because sometimes how you dressed is showing the people how you are. I don’t judge people if they use other types of clothes because everyone has their own style.

Margie Bernal, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I believe that society does focus on physical appearance of a person. It starts with people who judge others before they even meet them just because of the way the look and dress. Therefore, those people being judged feel pressured to change who they are, spending loads of money on clothes and shoes. They do this because they are afraid of being made fun of or are just trying to fit in. This happens especially in high school. They are made fun of if they don’t have the brand name stuff to wear. Also, the people who have tattoos or guys who wear black eyeliner are being judged. I think if that’s the way they like it, they should do it. It doesn’t mean I will, but I won't judge them for doing so.

Elias Urbina, Weslaco East High School

I think society depends on physical appearances too much. In high school, cliques are divided by the way they dress and by the way they act. Also, people get bullied because of their physical appearances. In certain jobs you have to look, dress, and act a certain way to get hired. Some girls go through eating disorders, for the reason that they are judged by their size. I personally think that society should not judge people by their physical appearances because they don’t know how much they can hurt the person.

Stephanie Bautista, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that it doesn’t matter what society thinks about what our appearances are like; us wearing piercings, having highlights, what we wear, how they wear their make-up, us having tattoos. Society should not take their time cruising how people look now a days because everybody is different; they dress different, wear different shoes, make-up, and listen to different music. Some people don’t talk to others because they way they look, or if they have piercings and tattoos. I think it’s a waste of time for them to be making their opinions on the way our appearances are. I dress different, wear different shoes, don’t wear make-up, and have a different attitude, than my friends. Some have piercings, tattoos, dress differently, wear make-up, and have different attitudes than me. I don’t waste my time cruising them about how they come to school. I have noticed that mainly here in high school people are divided in their own little groups because they look different or something that they have. Some kids get bullied a lot because of the way they dress and look. They also care about what you drive and maybe even how you treat them. In jobs, in order to get hired you have to dress, respect, follow their rules, and be faithful for you to get hired.

Cassandra Castillo, Weslaco East High School

Yes I do think that this society focuses too much on physical appearance. I think that we shouldn’t really care about how other people look and how they dress. There are some people who dress inappropriate like girls that wear really short skirts and guys who wear really baggy pants. These are the people that we should focus on. I still think that it doesn’t matter either way if we try to change the way they dress or not because most people probably won’t listen. I believe we sometimes focus on the wrong appearances like skin color. Another example is someone who has tattoos. We judge them and expect them to be bad people when sometimes they are not. Even though there are some people who are, we sometimes say we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. This is what I believe: we should do not judge a person by the way that they look.

Albert Hernandez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Many problems have been traced to focus on physical appearance in modern society. We often see this more on teenage girls, seeing that the media such as television, newspaper and magazine pressure us on how we should look. Many girls think if they don’t look like a model in a magazine, society won’t accept them. Society really emphasizes on how young girls should look. We have to be thin and have our hair done, we have to use make up and what not. High schools pressure people on how they look as well. Many students judge other students on their appearance and what they wear. If someone doesn’t have brand name shoes or clothes they are usually made fun of.

Mary Reyes, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think society does depend on appearances to much because some jobs don’t hire unless you weigh less than 110 pounds. Which I personally think is kind of cruel. Also in school there are clicks everywhere. You see people divided by how they dress, how they act, and if they’re in sports. Some people judge other people by how they look and how they dress. That’s how bulling starts: sometimes by girls making fun of other girls by the way they dress, how they look, or their size. Some girls actually go through eating disorders for the reason that that they get judge by their size. Some people go through suicide because of being bullied by the way they dress look or act. In jobs some people can’t get hired because of tattoos and pierces. Other people go through depression because they weren’t hired for a certain job that they worked hard for and others because they don’t fit in the group. Some guys get judge by wearing eye liner and skinny jeans that right away think there gay. I think it’s wrong for society to judge you by your physical appearance, it’s never right to judge a book by its cover you can always be wrong.

Maxine Cantu, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Looking elegant and dressing up with nice clothing is really important. Society is too dependent on how people look. If you want to get a good job it’s a must to dress up properly, because if you dress up with baggy pants, lose shirt or with graphic clothing there automatically going to say your “ghetto”, so that’s just going to show you have no responsibilities. There won’t be a good chance for you to get the job you may want, just for not dressing up. If a person has tattoos or piercings, people are going to treat them different because they’re not going to think they’re normal just because on how they look. Society is all about looks they treat you different just because how a person looks.

Samantha Castillo, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I believe that we just look at a person to think wrong or bad about them, every time we see a guy with baggy pants, piercings, and with tattoos  the first thing that comes to our mind is that he is a gang member. If we see a girl wearing black, we say she’s emo, we see a really nice dressed up guy and we think he is a doctor or something that really helps and is worth working as.

We all think that the way other people dress is a way of telling us what type of person we are and what we do for a living or on our daily basis. Sometimes we just dress the way we do because we feel comfortable that way and people judge us like if they know us. Truth is we judge everyone around us, no matter how they dress or what they appear to be.

Abigail Ramirez, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Jobs automatically look at your appearance how you walk into a job interview. If you are going for a job like front desk clerk, but you have tattoos and piercings or you have baggy clothes you will probably not get the job. They will think you are ghetto or a rebel. But if you walk in wearing nice clothes and you look “presentable” the more probable your chances are to get the job. When you look at some one like Kat Von D you think she looks weird, but to herself and many others she looks normal. This is why society is messed up with their psychological thinking.

Jamine Yglecias, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think society focuses too much on appearance because anything they see on people that seems weird or just doesn’t fit them, they seem to judge them. I’ve judged people before but I keep it to myself. I just think life is the way it is for a reason.

Mauricio Escalante, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

I think that people just look at a person and think wrong about them. That is why some people that have just gotten out of jail or has tattoos can’t get a job as easy as every one that does not have tattoos or came out of jail. People can’t get jobs just because they wear the wrong clothes or live in certain places. It is not cool when some one does not like you because they do not dress right or do not meet their standards so people think wrong and they don’t even know the person that they don’t like.

Jonathan Rocha, Weslaco East High School

Teacher: Minerva Hinojosa

Society affects the physical appearances of others in many ways. People are judged by what they wear in their daily life. Society can make fun of you depending if you have nice clothes or bad clothes or if it’s a good brand or not. They can even make fun of you and tell you, “Did you buy that at payless?” It doesn’t matter what you wear or if it’s in fashion, because society won’t remember you by the way you look, but of the way you are. The time comes on when society judges you by your appearance like if you wearing Hurley, they think that you’re a skater, when one wears brand clothes like Hollister, Abercrombie, etc. They think you’re prep or super rich, but then the person will end up someday being broke with no money. Society sometimes treats you better by the way you dress or even talk, if you have tattoos you don’t get a job or others see you as a bad person. Styles come and go, by the time you know it, you only used that purse or shoe once and they aren’t in style anymore. Another example of an appearance is your hair. If you have it in a Mohawk you’re a Mexican, at other times if you have really long hair others think you are a church girl. It’s time to stop judging others and starts thinking of what you’re doing wrong to fix it.

Stephanie Munoz, Weslaco East High School

Some people rely too much on appearance. On the outside something can seem so amazing and beautiful but on the inside it could be horrible and bad. Like for instance, beautiful women, she may look so beautiful and amazing on the outside but on the inside she could be a very terrible person. It is true what people say “beauty is only skin deep”. Nothing so beautiful and amazing can ever be eternal no matter what it is because like in Robert Frost’s writes in his poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay”.

Matthew Flores, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

To me good looks aren't everything but they do count for something. If a girl is cute, guys are going to go up and talk to her. If she's not all that pretty guys are not really going to pay that much attention. But good looks don't count for everything. If a pretty girl is mean and vulgar, people aren't going to want to stay around and be her friend. They're going to leave and find someone else who is respectful and nice.

Victor Voyce, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Jean Bovee

Nowadays, we have unknowingly placed much emphasis on our looks. Our society has become very shallow. Good physical appearances can allow one to be socially accepted and provide one with more opportunities to interact with others. We can’t all look like the girls on the runway or on the cover of magazines that are the ideal image of “beautiful”; one of the main reasons for the increasing number of people going for plastic surgery has shown that people view physical appearances as a “necessity” to be socially accepted.

Raquel Olguin, Weslaco High School
