SPI birding icon Barbara Kennett to be honored at birding center
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — A memorial service for Island birding icon Barbara Kennett is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.
The service is open to the public.
Among the speakers will be long-time friend Scarlet Colley.
Kennett, 87, passed away Aug. 19 at Valley Baptist Medical Center- Brownsville.
For years she was the face of birding on South Padre Island and her yard was the subject of
numerous articles.
Her yard was considered a must-see destination for birders visiting the Island.
Among her many visitors at her Island home were former President Jimmy Carter and wife
Rosalynn.
Her home was also a popular place during the spring migration for some of the nation’s top nature photographers, such as Anthony Mercieca, Tom Vezo, Larry Ditto, Brian Small, Arthur Morris and John Bax.
