Agents search for body in Rio Grande near Progreso

PROGRESO - The U.S. Border Patrol spent this morning searching the Rio Grande for a body believed to be that of a young Mexican national.

An agent saw what appeared to be a body floating in the river just east of the Progreso Port of Entry just after 10 a.m., local Border Patrol spokesman Dan Doty said.

After following it for several feet downriver, authorities on the Mexican side unsuccessfully attempted to bring the body to shore. Since then, agents have expanded their search from the Progreso bridge to the Cameron-Hidalgo county line.

As of noon, agents on both sides of the river along with the Mercedes and Weslaco fire departments continue to comb the area.
