Border Patrol agent involved in fatal accident

PHARR - A U.S. Border Patrol agent struck and killed a pedestrian late Monday night while patrolling south of the city, police said.

The accident occurred just before midnight when a man stepped out into the roadway near the intersection of Cage Boulevard and Military Highway.

The agent swerved but was unable to avoid him, inflicting fatal injuries, local Border Patrol spokesman John Lopez said.

Investigators had released few details on the victim's identity as of Tuesday morning except to say that they did not believe him to be an illegal immigrant.

"We found a U.S. birth certificate on him," Lopez said. "He showed no signs of recently crossing the border illegally."

Border Patrol officials refused to release the agent's identity.

Pharr police are handling the accident investigation.
