San Benito City Commission meets today

SAN BENITO — The City Commission will take action today on the second and final reading of an ordinance that may allow a local church to transform its agricultural land to commercial property.

Valley International Christian Church approached the city about the change to its 13.6 acre tract in the Block 23 San Benito Land and Water Company Subdivision in order to obtain better loan offers, the church’s president and senior pastor Jaime Loya said last month.

A commercial property, he said, would be worth more, thus allowing the church to obtain better loan rates to help in the building of its 56,000-square-foot space that is expected to seat 1,500-2,000 people.

At a public hearing last month, over a dozen people spoke in favor of the church and churchgoers and community members filled the room offering their support.

A single resident spoke against the ordinance amendment, explaining that the area is already congested with traffic.

The regular City Commission meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. at the San Benito Municipal Building Cesar Gonzalez Meeting Hall.
