City Secretary terminated: San Juan city commission voted to fire Nancy Davalos
SAN JUAN — The City Commission voted to terminate City Secretary Nancy Davalos at an executive session meeting Monday night, because her legal issues in Cameron County could last for months, City Attorney Javier Villalobos said.
Davalos was arraigned on charges of theft by a public servant last week for allegedly stealing $1,500 from her previous employer, the city of Port Isabel.
Davalos was suspended with pay after the allegations surfaced.
Villalobos said since Davalos’ legal issues in Cameron County could last for a long time, it would be impractical to keep her on paid leave.
“Whether the allegations are true or not, we don’t know and we’re not commenting, but it would take away from the citizens of San Juan,” Villalobos said.
Davalos is accused of taking $1,500 that had been paid by the A-Taxi agency to Port Isabel on Dec. 31, 2006. The money was not found in city records, which prompted Cameron County authorities to investigate, District Attorney Armando Villalobos said.
Davalos has previously declined to comment on the situation. Last week, her lawyer called the missing $1,500 “an egregious misunderstanding.”
Javier Villalobos said there is no concern that Davalos may have stolen money from San Juan, because she did not collect money in her position as the city’s secretary.
