Family of missing man bracing for the worst
WESLACO — The family of a man who has been missing for more than a month is hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst.
Tomas Nuñez’s family has not heard from the 32-year-old since the morning of Jan. 1., his sister Estela Delgado said.
Nuñez called his father about 7 a.m. on New Year’s Day and told him he was headed to Matamoros to see his girlfriend.
Police later learned his black Ford F-150 pickup made it across the border but that Nuñez was not in it.
An unidentified Hispanic man, who family members do not recognize, was behind the wheel, police said. Investigators are searching for the man for questioning.
His family contacted Weslaco Police Jan. 3 and filed a missing persons report, according to police spokesperson J.P. Rodriguez.
“He wasn’t a really peaceful guy, but he didn’t go out looking for trouble. He kept to himself and was usually with his family and friends,” Delgado said about her brother.
Nuñez has three children and worked at the oil refineries, she added. He weighs about 200 pounds, is about 5 feet, 4 inches tall and has a medium complexion. His eyes and hair are brown.
Nuñez also has a scar on his right eyebrow from a previous piercing and several tattoos, including the name “Yvonne” on his right wrist, “Hecho por Mexicanos” on the right forearm, the santisima muerte on his right shoulder and the word “Nunez” and a dragon on his calves.
He was last seen wearing a pink long-sleeved button-down shirt, blue jeans, orange ostrich boots and a matching belt, police said.
Anyone with information is urged to call Weslaco Crime Stoppers at 956-968-TIPS (8477).
The family is hoping that someone knows his whereabouts or saw something.
“One day we’re talking positive, another moment we lose our hope,” Delgado said. “We’re ready for (bad news). We just want to have some closure.”
