Shooting in broad daylight leaves one injured
Comments 0 | Recommend 0SAN JUAN - A shooting in broad daylight at a busy strip mall left bystanders aghast and a nearby elementary school in lockdown Friday.
Up to five men opened fire on a black Toyota Camry just before noon near Raul Longoria Road and East Ciro Drive, striking one man at least twice.
The injured man drove several yards through the Iglesias Professional Plaza parking lot before coming to a stop, San Juan police Investigator Rolando Garcia said.
Emergency responders took the wounded man to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
As investigators surrounded the victim's bullet-ridden car Friday afternoon, several people who worked at nearby dentist offices and clinics that fill the medical plaza were corralled behind police lines to report what they saw.
Some said they heard the shots but few would admit to actually watching the attack play out. Surveillance cameras at the nearby San Juan Pharmacy reportedly caught the incident on tape and were seized as evidence by police.
"Hopefully, with video and witness statements we will be able to determine a pretty clear idea of what happened," Garcia said.
Authorities canvassing the scene identified 14 casings from bullets fired at the vehicle.
In the chaos after the shooting, administrators at nearby Doedyns Elementary School initiated lockdown procedures on their campus but lifted them about 45 minutes later.
As of late Friday, officials had released almost no details about the victim including his name, age and condition.
But within minutes of the shooting, officers detained three men for questioning less than a mile away - near Ferguson Avenue and Chula Vista Drive.
All three were cooperating with the investigation, and none of them had been charged with a crime as of Friday evening, Garcia said.
As of late Friday, a motive for the shooting remained unclear, Garcia said.
