Man gunned down in Fronton
FRONTON — Starr County Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking into the shooting death of a local man.
Family members brought Salvador Adrian Ramirez to Starr County Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning. He died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said.
Ramirez, 28, of Roma, was at an acquaintance’s home in Fronton — a community of about 630 people four miles west of Roma — when the incident occurred about 4 a.m., sheriff’s Capt. Larry Fuentes said.
“He was shot by a male subject who we believe is a Mexican national,” he said. “We don’t have a name — a nickname is all we have.”
Fuentes said it appears Ramirez was shot with a low-caliber gun. The Starr County Major Crimes Unit has interviewed several witnesses.
Investigators don’t believe the incident was drug- or gang-related, Fuentes said.
“From what we know,” he said, “it looks like maybe it was just an argument that got out of hand.”
Ramirez’s slaying is at least the second homicide in the Roma area this month.
Jose Arturo Santa Cruz Cruz, 21, is accused of shoot Lauro Gonzalez several times in the torso about 1 p.m. July 1 outside an abandoned lumberyard on Gladiator Avenue in Roma, according to authorities.
The Texas Department of Public Safety took Cruz, a Mexican national, into custody on a charge of unlawfully carrying a weapon. Authorities said they later realized he was their prime suspect in Gonzalez’s death and charged Cruz with murder, a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.
