Jailing for former sheriff brings suspension

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

AMARILLO - A Panhandle lawman has been suspended after allowing a convicted former sheriff to avoid staying in a jail cell.

Capt. Roger Haney let former Potter County Sheriff Mike Shumate stay in an office instead of a jail cell last month. Shumate had been convicted of engaging in organized criminal activity; Haney was the acting Potter County Sheriff.

At the time, Haney justified Shumate not being held in a cell because of safety for the former sheriff and the staff.

Potter County Sheriff Ron Boyter said today that Haney will serve the 10-day suspension two days a week until Aug. 18.

Haney was not at the detention center today and could not be reached to comment. A number listed for R. Haney in the Amarillo area is unlisted.

Shumate was sentenced in June to 180 days in jail and eight years probation for accepting bribes from a vendor who supplied food for the county jail.
