HUD grant to help local homeless vets
HARLINGEN — The Harlingen Housing Authority has been awarded $99,057 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist homeless Rio Grande Valley military veterans find and pay for housing with tenant-based vouchers.
The Harlingen Housing Authority received a similar grant recently, which paid for 25 home vouchers, all of which are being used by homeless and low-income Valley military veterans, said U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, D-Mercedes, whose district covers a portion of Cameron County.
“We owe a great deal to our returning veterans especially when it comes to making sure that they, and their families, have a comfortable place to call home,” Hinojosa said.
“I am very happy to see the progress and success the Harlingen Housing Authority is having with this HUD grant program. For some veterans, returning home can be a very difficult process, and finding and affording a place to live can be one of the most difficult tasks. This program is designed to help our veterans in need.”
“This recent HUD grant will allow for another 25 vouchers to be given to those veterans who qualify,” Hinojosa said.
