LAS YESCAS — An 18-year-old Rio Hondo High School student is the victim of what investigators are calling an accidental shooting.

Ricardo Ramos was pronounced dead Sunday at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Justice of the Peace Manuel Flores said.

Ramos was shot in the head with a .22-caliber rifle, fired by a 13-year-old family member who may have been a cousin, while they where shooting birds, Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said, adding he could not disclose the boy’s name because he is a minor.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a house at 31951 Roberto St. in Las Yescas in response to a call about a shooting Sunday, Lucio said.

The case remains under investigation, Lucio said.

Ramos had completed his course work and was preparing for a January graduation from Rio Hondo High School, Superintendent Anneliese McMinn said.

“He was a good student,” McMinn said. “He was a good child. He was not a trouble maker at all.”
