HARLINGEN — Former Donna mayor Rick Morales has filed as a candidate for mayor of Harlingen in the May 11 city election, he said in a statement.
A 1985 graduate of Harlingen High School, Morales said he has more than 25 years experience in business, finance and community development.
“I am grateful to have this opportunity to try and convince the good people of Harlingen to elect me as their next mayor,” he said. “You won’t get the same old, business-as-usual approach to managing our city’s resources.
“Our community has some challenges but more importantly, great assets.”
Morales served as mayor of Donna from 2002 to 2007. He said he helped build an international bridge, reduced taxes for six years in a row and worked to obtain more than $65 million in grants and low-interest loans from the state for housing development and infrastructure needs.
In Harlingen, Morales served as a member of the Harlingen Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Urban County Advisory Board and the board of the Texas State Technical College Texas Motor Transportation Association, he said.
