LA GRULLA -- Agents with the U.S. Border Patrol said they picked up more than 700 pounds of marijuana from a sport utility vehicle heading northward toward this Starr County community.

The agents spotted a suspicious-looking 1988 Chevrolet Suburban heading toward La Grulla from the Rio Grande today, said Agent Dan Doty, a local Border Patrol spokesman.

After the agents stopped the vehicle, its driver took off on foot and evaded authorities. Inside the back of the Suburban were several bundles of marijuana, totalling 708 pounds, Doty said.

The drugs had an approximate street value of $566,400.
