Police: Mom dragged son over laptop dispute
HARLINGEN — A teenager was hospitalized and his mother jailed after he was dragged by her car in a dispute over a laptop computer, police said.
The woman was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after her 18-year-old son was dragged down the street when the two argued about the computer, Harlingen police spokesman Dave Osborne said.
The incident began when the mother and son were arguing in her car near Harlingen High School around 4:30 p.m. Monday, Osborne said.
According to police, the son got out of the car, tossed the computer inside, and then opened the door to retrieve it as his mother began driving away.
The teen was somehow caught by the moving vehicle and dragged along the street, Osborne said.
The teen was dragged about a block, to Ninth Street and Carrol Avenue as his mother continued to drive, Osborne said.
When the teen was somehow released by the car, the mother left the scene. Her car was stopped by officers on Lozano Avenue, where she was arrested, Osborne said.
“The mother was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with the car being the deadly weapon,” Osborne said. “She will be arraigned (Tuesday).”
The teen was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen by Harlingen Emergency Medical Service, where he was treated for scrapes and bruises, Osborne said. The son was still hospitalized at press time.
