Sunshine residents hold birthday bash, parade
HARLINGEN — It was a parade with lots of color, high energy, enthusiasm — and the Grinch.
Residents of Sunshine Country Club Estates put on a “Dr. Seuss Spectacular Parade” on Friday to celebrate the author’s birthday.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, was best known for his children’s books such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “Fox in Socks” and “Horton Hears a Who.” He was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Mass., and died in 1991.
The parade included a four-piece band on a float, brightly decorated golf carts, a costumed Cat in the Hat, costumed marchers and a pajama-clad walker precision drill team.
Spectators gathered on their front yards and along the streets as the parade wound around the country club.
Phyllis Bodwell and a group of friends said the parade was “tops.”
One of the event organizers, Lassey Dahlstrom, was dressed in a yellow-and-green costume as a “Drum-tummied Strum.” She said she was pleased by the parade’s turnout because the residents seemed to really enjoy it.
“This is what we do here — we play,” Dahlstrom said.
Most of the country club’s residents are retired and many of them volunteer for different organizations, Dahlstrom said. But they also like to do other activities like celebrate anniversaries and put on shows and parades.
“It keeps us healthy because as you can see we exercise a lot,” Dahlstrom said shortly after the mile-long parade.
Harold Schaubert, 84, agreed. He participated in the “Petunia Pugh Welcomes You” game where he tossed toilet paper rolls through a pink toilet seat.
“(Staying active) is the only thing that keeps you young,” Schaubert said.
Virginia Carubia, 64, was dressed in a bright pink gown and wore oversized glasses and was a walkers precision drill team member.
“We practiced (the routine) for about two weeks,” Carubia said. “It was a cute theme and people liked it.”
Sam Carubia, 78, said participating in activities like the parade is a chance for people to get together and contribute to the community.
“It gives you a more positive outlook in life,” Sam Carubia said.
Dahlstrom said the country club puts on a big production every year. After the Dr. Seuss parade this year, she’s already planning next year’s event.
