The Associated Press
FORT WORTH - A birthday party for a young girl ended in bloodshed after police said a man in a green sedan drove up and opened fire on the duplex where the party was under way.
One person was killed and at least four others, including three children, were wounded.
Police Lt. Paul Henderson said authorities don't have a motive for the Sunday night shooting and had not determined whether the suspect was targeting a particular person or if it was a drive-by shooting.
A 48-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the duplex, Henderson said. A 36-year-old woman was shot in the leg and face. Henderson said a 5-year-old girl was struck in the neck and stomach and was in critical condition. A 10-year-old girl was in serious condition with gunshot wounds to her extremities and a 9-year-old girl was in fair condition after being hit by shrapnel.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that another child was taken by a private vehicle to the hospital with a graze wound to the head.
``I am angry because they shot at kids,'' Martha Reed, who said she is the niece of the woman who was killed, told the newspaper. ``It doesn't make any sense.''
Dallas-Fort Worth television station WFAA said witnesses said the 48-year-old woman was shot as she tried to get the children to safety inside the home.
Family members said the party was for the wounded 9-year-old.
