Pharr men lead police on chase over baseball cap

SAN JUAN - Two men were arrested Tuesday night after leading police on a 10-mile chase - all over a baseball cap.

Now 18-year-old Pharr residents Eugene Davila and Jesse Suarez face a slew of criminal charges in connection with the robbery and ensuing chase.

Police say the men used a machete and an ice pick to threaten a teenage victim at the park.

The men demanded money, but when the teen told them he didn't have any money, they took his designer hat instead, said San Juan Police Inv. Rolando Garcia.

The men drove off in a Dodge Neon, but a witness of the robbery called police while it was in progress. When police caught up with the men and tried to pull them over, they continued to speed off through Pharr and McAllen, Garcia said..

The men ran a red light in McAllen and crashed their car at the intersection of 10th Street and the Expressway 83 frontage road, Garcia said.

After the crash, both suspects fled the vehicle briefly on foot before they were apprehended.

Garcia said officers found the machete and ice pick - as well as the designer hat - inside their car.

"We never said they were smart," Garcia said.

Later today, the two are expected to appear before a judge and be formally charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, evading arrest with a vehicle and evading arrest on foot. Davila will also face drug charges, Garcia said, since police found him in possession of cocaine and marijuana when he was arrested.
