Review offers little in Texas sailor's 2005 death

HOUSTON — A Navy investigation into the 2005 disappearance of a Houston-area sailor has closed with few details on him being assumed lost at sea.

Seaman Apprentice Robert ``Bobby'' Macrum of Sugar Land disappeared from the USS Princeton about 35 miles off the coast of Iran.

Documents obtained by the Houston Chronicle, under the Freedom of Information Act, have portions blacked out or deleted.

Mary Macrum Jones, who read the recently completed report, suspects foul play in her 22-year-old son's death and says ``it is more a mystery to me now than it ever was.''

Macrum was last seen Sept. 12, 2005, on his ship in the Arabian Gulf.

The Naval Criminal Investigation Service report said all logical investigative actions to determine circumstances of the death have been exhausted and the case is closed.
