Elementary school principal accused of running gambling ring
Comments 0 | Recommend 0MISSION -- An elementary school principal who allegedly ran a gambling ring out of his home was arraigned on criminal charges today.
Police say Jose Luis Esquivel, 38, ran a gambling ring out his home for months, taking a cut of high-priced Texas Hold 'Em poker games.
Esquivel is an assistant principal at McAllen's Castañeda Elementary School.
On Saturday, police executed a search warrant at his home where they receoved thousands of dollars as well as cocaine that had apparently been hidden by patrons, Mission Police Lt. Martin Garza said. Garza said 40 to 50 patrons were at the house at the time of the raid.
Mark May, a spokesman for the school district, said Esquivel has not been disciplined because the district is on a summer break. The district will likely address Esquivel's situation July 14, when it resumes operations.
