Body found in river near Rio Grande City with no head or hands
RIO GRANDE CITY — Authorities are working to identify the body of a male discovered Tuesday in the Rio Grande with no head and no hands.
The Starr County Violent Crime Task Force is investigating the case as a homicide.
“We don’t know if it was on the Mexican side or on the U.S. side where he was killed,” said Heriberto Silva, district attorney for a region that includes Starr County. “It just happened it ended up on the U.S. side, and we are investigating that as a homicide.”
Dr. Fulgencio Salinas is conducting an autopsy in Mission to try to identify the victim and determine the cause and manner of death.
Authorities estimate the body had been in the water for more than a week before U.S. Border Patrol agents was discovered it about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Water and Clay streets, south of the Izaguirre Ranch on the south side of Rio Grande City.
The Starr County Violent Crime Task Force is comprised of the Starr County District Attorney’s Office, the Starr County Sheriff’s Office and the Rio Grande City and Roma police departments.
