Drunk driver sentenced to 15 years for motorcyclist’s death
Comments 0 | Recommend 0EDINBURG – A Pharr man was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison for striking and killing a motorcyclist while driving drunk.
Florencio Salas, 50, pleaded guilty to one count of intoxication manslaughter stemming from the death of 30-year-old Adolfo Navarro, of Mission, earlier this year.
According to court documents, Salas had a blood alcohol level of .268 when he was arrested — more than three times Texas’ .08 legal driving limit.
Navarro was hit from behind near the intersection of Trenton and McColl roads during the daylight hours of Aug. 16.
Salas fled the scene, but was found after he crashed his Chevrolet pickup truck into a guardrail at the U.S. 281-Expressway 83 interchange later that day.
He had been drinking heavily the night before and consumed a few more drinks the morning he hit Navarro, court documents state.
Salas, who has two prior DWI convictions from the 1990s, avoided a maximum 20-year prison sentence by agreeing to plead guilty.
