Not only did Dr. Rick Bassett recently surpass 10,000 knee replacement surgeries, but he has also performed more than 2,000 hip replacement surgeries.
People from 48 states have come to Valley Baptist Medical Center to have Bassett perform surgery on them.
“The exciting thing is that we start with a person who is crippled with pain, and if all goes well, they get their life back,” Bassett said.
His patients range from babies born with congenital hip dislocations to older folks who are in a great deal of knee and hip pain. He said about 95 percent of his patients are between the ages of 50 and 80.
Not only does Bassett perform surgeries on patients, but he is also a biomedical engineer who has worked with an international company to design the joint replacement prostheses he uses, including three different knee prostheses and one hip prosthesis, he said. Bassett said he has been able to improve each prosthesis and give the patients more flexibility and range of motion.
Currently, he is working on his fourth patented knee, which is still in the process of being approved.
Bassett has also traveled around the world working with surgeons to perfect their knee and hip replacement surgeries. At one point, he would travel three to four times per year to Asia, Europe, and beyond to teach his techniques. Spain was one of his favorite spots, and it helps that he speaks Spanish.
For his future plans, he plans on continuing to improve knee and hip prostheses and to take care of people.
