TSTC to host FAFSA workshop
Financial aid event is free, open to public
HARLINGEN — One-on-one assistance with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for new and returning students will be available from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 12 during College Goal Sunday at Texas State Technical College Harlingen.
There is no admission fee or registration fee and the public is welcome to participate at the Learning Resource Center, along Loop 499.
Those interested in applying for financial aid for the 2012-2013 academic year must complete the 2012-2013 FAFSA, TSTC said. The application is free and is available online at www.fafsa.gov. Parents and students should file their 2011 tax return, prior to completing the FAFSA. This will facilitate the use of the IRS Data Retrieval function. The federal tax return information can be electronically imported into the
FAFSA application.
This electronic retrieval tool makes the application
process easier and more accurate as long as the tax information is
correct. The FAFSA information is available in English and Spanish.
Participants should bring all 2011 tax documents including W-2 forms and federal income tax returns for the student — if under age 24 — and parents; plus, bring non-tax information related to child support, veteran’s benefits, current bank statements, and business or investment records.
Admissions Advisor Gisela Zuniga said that TSTC employees and the G-Force, TSTC students who are trained to inform prospective students and parents about all facets of college education, will assist anyone at College Goal Sunday regardless of what college or university they plan to attend. Participants may sign up to become eligible for a drawing to win $250 toward TSTC textbooks.
“We go through everything step by step to clear up any possible confusion and make sure applicants put accurate information on the forms,” G-Force student Cathy L. Weaver said.
