Caring for land pays dividends
To the Editor:
Last year, if spotting a large female bobcat with its kitten sauntering across a residential lawn in suburban Parkwood, Harlingen, wasn’t a surprise, imagine my reaction last week while walking the very same South Parkwood Drive area.
At the intersection of South and East Parkwood, what do I behold at 8:30 a.m. approaching me across an arroyo side residential lawn but a beautiful doe standing about 4½ feet at the shoulder. With its spotted torso it looked me over and nonchalantly moved on between two homes into the arroyo vegetation. It was a both a startling and gorgeous sight to behold.
The experience attests to the benefits of maintaining green areas in the city. And by the way, Parkwood area residents have reported frequently seeing an 8-foot alligator sunning itself on the east banks of the arroyo.
