Hither and yon;opinions and questions
Editor:
Time for a quick "opinion update."

I liked James Matz as county commissioner, but lately he's become just a grumpy old man who can't put Gilberto Hinojosa behind him. Let's move on Mr. Matz and please don't try and smear our good sheriff Omar Lucio just because there is a Republican opponent. That dog won't hunt ... and it's beneath you.

Commissioner Tamayo, thank you for your leadership and for doing a fine job representing Northern Cameron County. Your efforts to bring us an Adult Learning Center and Boy's Club are greatly appreciated by the citizens of Santa Rosa. I personally do not see those type of expenditures as the role of county government, but that's not your doing. Thank you just the same.

Hate to see Larry James retire. As I've previously stated, Larry James personifies the Valley like no one else. Better treat him right, KGBT. People will be watching. ... or not.

Why is Obama's pastor and the ACLU not helping, but hurting Obama's presidential candidacy? Don't they realize that this could ruin his chances? Let me spell it out for you my political junkies. Pastor Wright and the ACLU feel that their message of racial inequality is more important than the candidacy of Barack Obama. Obama is not Jessie Jackson and therefore not worthy of their support. That half white man in him represents a problem for some blacks. This is a lesson for conservatives who think Obama is anything close to being liberal or militant.

When I was a boy growing up in Santa Rosa, I knew of only one man who had been in prison. He and another young man had raped a local woman. It was said that they "cut her with a beer bottle over by the railroad tracks." I look around now and the list is endless. What has happened to us, Raza ?

There's a lesson to be learned by BND
Editor:
It seems that a long while back dreams of a bridge from the port of Brownsville to Mexico were really in the making with help from a couple of very willing organizations. There was also help given by some nice people from Mexico, who as it turned out now, were some of the best used car salesmen ever to set foot in the area.

It's been said that this nice man from Mexico would just ride into town and out to the port along with a mariachi band in the back of a pick-up truck where they would unload a cooler of Corona beer and hug the people from BND and pat them on the back. Once everybody was in a festive mood, this nice used car salesman would present an invoice marked "success fees" and they would write him a check right on the spot. Now this went on for some time and one day a group of BND people went along a road south of the ship channel to where this bridge was supposed to be built.

They looked and looked but could not see anything that might be part of a bridge under construction but didn't really worry much because there were a lot of weeds in the way and it could obstruct the sight of that big new bridge. That nice used car salesman knew something about American history and wanted to show his appreciation.

He said that  ... long ago, around 1869 up in Promontory, Utah, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed and there was a ceremony held by driving the last railroad spike. He said on that day while collecting another "success fee" he wanted to present the BND with a little token. It was a very, very large screw in a wooden box. His two brother-in-laws were present and so over come with glee they just laugh until both cried.

That nice used car salesman could barley contain himself because he just wanted to break out in gleeful laughter also but held it until they loaded up in his fine new car and started to leave. Tears just streamed down his face. Some time after the announcement had to be made that there wasn't anymore money to pay "success fees" and that nice used car salesman just stopped bringing the band, beer and goat tacos.

Sometimes someone will go down that road east of the Port of Brownsville to see if anything has been built looking like a bridge but the weeds are still pretty high. All in all, I guess about all they did end up with was that great big screw.
