St. Alban's Day School holds benefit

St. Alban's Day School in Harlingen last month hosted a Valentine's Day Movie Night to benefit the Harlingen Humane Society and Golden Palms. Shown, from left, are Erik Garza, Wilder Wilson, August Wilson and Bronson Burke, who were among the more than 60 students came to watch a movie, make Valentines for residents of Golden Palms and bring food to homeless animals at the HHS. The students were able to raise more than $1,300 for the shelter and collected more than 100 pounds of pet food.

Boys and Girls Club honors Senator Eddie Lucio Jr.

State Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. was recently honored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America with the “Great Texan” award. Lucio received the honor for his efforts on behalf of Boys and Girls Clubs throughout Texas. He was also recognized for his support of the Rio Grande Valley's Clubs. Lucio received the award at the Boys and Girls Club of Harlingen.

Victor Chavez headlines Danzon, A Celebration of Latin American Music

Victor Chavez Jr. of El Paso will be the main attraction at the Danzon, A Celebration of Latin American Music set for 7 p.m. today at Marine Military Academy's Yeckel Auditorium. Chavez, a world-renown clarinetist, earned his music education degree from Baylor University and was the second clarinetist with the Waco Symphony Orchestra. He also earned the Fulbright Lusk Fellowship which allowed him to study in Paris, France, under the tutelage of Guy Deplus, former soloist of L'Opera de Paris and teacher of the Conservatoire National Superior de Paris. Chavez received his master's degree from DePaul University, while under the tutelage of Larry Combs, former principal clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
