Yes, because we learn more and get good grades. They have more important information that we can learn. One more thing that helps us is the pictures the books have. I think that is easier for the teachers too. When the little kids come to seventh grade, it will be easier for them to learn too.

Jonathan Segundo

Teacher: Wenndy Pray

In my personal opinion, I think schools should stop using textbooks. They constantly change and schools don't always have all the money in the world to keep updating them, and don't get me started on all the paper we're wasting. It would be a lot easier to get students an inexpensive piece of technology. Kids wouldn't have to carry around tons of heavy books and they would have access to all the latest information. We should take advantage of the technology we have today and use it for the better. I think it would be a very good investment.

Alexx Arredondo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Xavier Casanova

In my opinion, I don’t think schools should continue to use textbooks; a main reason would be the same information in textbooks can be more easily found on the internet. Some students don’t have internet access at home, but computers are accessible here on campus before school, and during lunch. I for one have always found it simpler and more effective to study and research on the world wide web rather than to study out of a less and limited informative textbook. A personal issue I also have with textbooks is misplacing them because I hardly ever use them. Then I end up having to pay for them. For those main reasons, it is my opinion that textbooks should no longer be used at school.

Elizabeth Medrano, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Xavier Casanova

I think schools shouldn't continue to use textbooks because there's a lot of new technology coming up and all the textbooks from any subject would have all the information in a high tech, light weight device. It can be all subjects all into a small device and you wouldn't have to carry all those heavy books everywhere you go. Since we're starting to get more involved into using technology more at school and in classes, I think this would be a great idea into actually using all these advance stuff and make new changes for the better of everyone in all school districts.

Krystal Cavazos, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Xavier Casanova

I personally think that school should discontinue the use of textbooks. I think that they’re a complete waste of space and paper now a day. I think that we should switch to technology; which is what most school districts are starting to do. We could download these books to our phone, laptops, eReaders, and iPads. We carry these items with us regardless. It’s not like an app that has my math, reading, or science book is going to make my pocket heavier. It would also be easier to do homework on the go, instead of dragging a heavy book around.

Amanda Guerrero, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Xavier Casanova

Yes, because the textbooks is good for reading it gives you a lot of information about the old times how was it back then, but students don't take care of the textbooks is like whatever to them. They write on it and a lot of graffiti is like they don't pay it, so they don't take care of them. The students don't realize it that the parents are the one paying for the textbooks, students are wondering how? Well with the taxes that our parents pay for. The textbooks are really important because you want to know about what happened in the past, and how things have changed over the years. It's also really important because its cool knowing other countries culture and laws.

Maria Martinez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Xavier Casanova

Schools should not continue to use textbooks because it's basically just a waste of time. It's a waste of time because students don't like to read to begin with so they're not going to enjoy reading a big boring textbook. In replace of textbooks they should just have the textbooks online and we can go on and read them there. For those who don't have access to a computer they can go to a local library when they need to. Technology is becoming bigger in our world so I’m pretty sure textbooks won't be around for long.

Jaclyn Garcia, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Xavier Casanova

I think schools shouldn't use text books as much as we used to. Reason why is because we have all this technology & we are able to look up anything fast through our daily devices. So why settle flipping through pages in a 900 page text books when you could look up anything instantly in a phone or computer with Web access. So I think we really shouldn't use text books anymore because we found an easier & quicker way to find things easily. Life just got a whole lot easier with our new high tech media we have now.

Michael Perez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Edna Camacho

I think schools shouldn't require us the students to keep using the textbooks. The reason I think that is because textbooks are too heavy and they don't only make us carry one, they make us carry two. Well, it depends on how many classes require a textbook. For example I have four classes on "A" days and on that day I have to carry two books! I hate that! I know other teens feel the same way.

Jacqueline Ruiz, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Edna Camacho

Text books shouldn’t be used in school anymore, especially since the world’s technology has developed a lot since back then. We have computers, iPads, eBooks, and many other useful products. Text books are heavy to be carrying around. They aren’t always in the greatest condition because of the previous owners, and many are out to date. We spend a lot of money on text books, when we can easily have all of the one’s we need on one simple technology product. Plus, it’s probably a lot easier to take notes, and more organized. The future may start using eBooks instead of text books, because it’s just time to have a greater change with learning.

Amber Solis, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Edna Camacho

I say school shouldn't continue using textbooks. Because now days we all have electronics and we can find the books through the internet. And the internet is a good reason to stop killing trees that give us oxygen to make textbooks. Of course, some people recycle. And books are too heavy for us to carry. And that’s because the school has long hallways, its too much walking. Some people carry 3 books. That’s a lot to carry, when we could just bring our little electronic and get the books there.

Analili Murillo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Edna Camacho

No, because textbooks are not up to date so the research is not new.

Brianna Garza, Vernon Middle School

Teacher: Nellie Bejaran

It is not a good idea to rely on electricity and battery powered computers. The first storm we have in our area will knock out most of our power.

Jose Munoz, Vernon Middle School

Teacher: Nellie Bejaran

I think that schools should continue to use textbooks. My reason for that is because if schools replace textbooks with touch screens tablets, some students may not know how to use it. That is because not all parents can afford it. Then teachers would be wasting their time teaching how to use the tablet instead of teaching the material.

Shyanne Arevalo, Vernon Middle School

Teacher: Nellie Bejaran

I think we shouldn’t use textbooks anymore. Why? Because in this generation we have more technology. I think we should start using tablets.

Bianca Herrera, Vernon Middle School

Teacher: Nellie Bejaran

I think that schools should not use textbooks if they have the budget to buy us new equipment to study with. If the school does not have the budget to buy us new equipment, then schools should stick to textbooks because, even though they are not high-tech, they still help us learn.

Antonio Carrillo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don't think schools should still use textbooks, but it's fine if the teachers have one for reference. Some kids can't learn from textbooks, I know that I can't. Teachers should try to come up with a fun, colorful way of teaching because that's a good way to have students remember stuff. It's better to teach something knowing that the students remember it, rather than expecting them to study because there's no guarantee that they'll actually study. Considering that high school students just like to tag, rip, and lose everything, it's just a waste of money.

Michelle Herrera, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Text books? I say no! We are in the 21st century and it's time to throw text books out and bring in the iPads. You have everything you need in just one little iPad. You have your text books and your word documents and everything else you need on an iPad. So why use old heavy text books when you can use new light weight iPads that aren't a hassle? I think it's time to move on and leave boring old text books behind.

Tiffani Ochoa, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In my opinion I don’t think schools should still use textbooks because most students damage the books and it’s a waste of money! The school will save a lot of money if they don’t buy textbooks anymore. They should supply us with technological items like the iPads, Mac laptops, etc. it will be much easier to use and to handle. Also, most teachers don’t use textbooks nowadays; they teach students from the research they make on the internet. Students have also stopped using textbooks since the school has enough money for computers and internet. This is why I agree to disagree on buying textbooks!

Jazmin Ginez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think that schools shouldn’t use textbooks anymore for one of the biggest reason there super heavy and they make us carry them around in our bags all day. Another reason is if the school has all that money to buy books they should invest in tablets. With these new technological innovations we would have access to so much more learning and knowledge.

Tevin Casares, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In my opinion I don't think that schools should be using text books. This is the 21st century and a lot of new learning technology has been developed for the use of students, I think that Weslaco High School should invest in tablets. They are very light and more advanced than text books, and would open windows for students to new knowledge.

Leah Regalado, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don’t think schools should still use text books, because they are not needed all the time. Today’s technology could also eliminate all the textbooks.

Adolfo Gonzalez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think textbooks should still be used because some kids do not have the privilege of a computer in their houses, so if they were assigned homework yes they could do it in the library, but what if they took the bus? They wouldn't have the time and would not be able to do their homework. This is why I think textbooks should still be used.

Cristian Espinoza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks are pretty much great for just about nothing. Let's face it they are bulky, a pain in the spine to carry (trust me) and take up a lot of locker space. To take them out and haul them to a class everyday when you are in high school is like trying to get through a traffic jam of tractor trailers in five minutes. If only we had something that was slim, lightweight and easy to carry. We are not in 1980 anymore; we have iPads, Kindles, and e-books to download the material. Please my back is killing me!!!

Benjamin Ortiz, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

School should stop using textbooks because most textbooks that we go and check out are written on and are in bad condition. Another thing is that books are very heavy, especially if you are carrying around 2-3 a day. Books are also very easy to rip. Sometimes we turn the page and forget that something was on top of the page so the page rips without us knowing. If we exchanged textbooks for something more modern like an iPad, we would not have all these problems.

Max Feng, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In this day and age I definitely think it depends on the course you're taking to decide if a textbook is necessary or not. It also depends on your teacher, some may not want to use them because they believe that they are out dated and so do I.

Reagan Bell, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that textbooks should continue to be used in classrooms because that is where all the information that you need is. When you work on a worksheet in class and don't know where the teacher is or can't find answers, you can open up your book and find everything you need, and then you can even read things in the textbook that can be very helpful for studying. Some schools also do not allow electronics which is another reason to why we should still use textbooks.

Trisha Rangel, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Even though many textbooks can be found online, some students don't have access to a computer and that is why I think that it is good to continue the use of textbooks. They are reliable and you can use them whenever you needed to.

Monica Garcia, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

For years, students have had to carry textbooks in and out of school to help complete their daily assignments and homework. But as of today we no longer live in the "dinosaur ages", and should put a stop to the use of textbooks in a classroom. The same information on a textbook can be easily found on the internet as well. In most schools, technology is the new replacement of textbooks. So why not should this replacement continue in all schools around the globe. Another benefit to this discontinuation of textbooks is that we could be able to save trees worldwide.

Janelle Negrete, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I personally think textbooks should not be used during classrooms. Why, you might ask? Well, the answer is clearly simple, because technology has insanely grown into this new generation and many generations to come. For example, the iPad could be in great usage for finding information in World History, or looking up a various amount of definitions in English class. What I'm basically saying is books are old and technology is in with the new!

Peter Palomo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Text book should not be used anymore in today’s schools. All of the Pre-AP or AP teachers I have had in the past base most of their class away from the book anyway. Just the other day I went and received my Algebra book and the first thing my teacher told me was "you can go ahead and stick these under your bed for the year!" all that does is put pressure on me to make sure I don't lose it through out the year so I don’t have to pay a fine.

Jacob Martin, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

YES! Schools should always use textbooks due to the fact that not every teacher knows everything they need to teach by memory and a textbook can always be used to refresh the teacher and the student’s memory. Also textbooks can’t and won’t be able to change until it is rewritten unlike the internet where anyone can log onto a website and change the information that is there. Another reason we should still use textbooks is because technology will fail us one day and we will have no more technology and we will be forced to go back to relying on textbooks rather than technology.

Amber Germain, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks should not be used in classrooms anymore because most students take advantage of the privilege and they vandalize the book. Also, now in the 21st century we are more advanced in technology than ever before and we should take action and use iPads. I think iPads will help us save money and will help the students learn more and be successful in school.

Kassandra Castillo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think it’s very important that schools should still use textbooks. Why you ask? Because textbooks are a reference, it’s a teaching tool. It helps students that have trouble in what they don’t understand. Yes, it may be a heavy load to carry books to every class, but they are still for a good purpose.

Irma Cavazos, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that textbooks should be used in the classroom because it’s an important resource to go to if you need some research. In those textbooks is written history from another time; it's important to know that history and never forget it. We learn from that history and correct our mistakes.

Annahi Fuentes, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think we should still use text books because buying electronics such as iPads are really expensive. And the way that the economy is going; I believe that it is better to just stay with using books. If we stay with books at least they can last up to 5 years maybe more. Some teachers might not use the books but some might to give homework etc. I think we should just stay with text books, instead of wasting more money with electronics.

Leslie Benavidez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don't think that we should get rid of text books, but I do think that we should have an easier way to have them. For example, maybe we could use iPads or Kindle. Yes they might be a little pricy, but you could keep on using it for generations in the school.

Ralphie Casas, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that it would be much simpler to carry a tablet than a textbook. Many students have to bear the weight of so many textbooks from all their classes when it is so much simpler to carry a tablet around. Today, some textbooks even have information that has yet to be updated and on a tablet it could be done in a flash. Tablets can even be used for the generations to come.

Anna Valdez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think schools should keep textbooks because everything students need to know is in the books. All there is to learn and know are in the textbooks including problems you can solve to make sure you understand what you are learning. The textbooks are teachers. Just in pages.

Zenaida de Anda, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks should still be used in classrooms! I'm sure some people say we shouldn't probably because they think they can find everything and anything on their phones. But no, because not everything on the web is true! So that is why I'd rather use a textbook than a "smart" phone.

Delilah Sanchez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think we should still use textbooks in school. Yes, textbooks are a bit cumbersome, but they don't require a WIFI or internet connection like a laptop or iPads. If the system was down at school, how would we do our lessons? Also, textbooks help us build better reading skills, especially when we read out loud in class. Someone out there would probably argue," You can do that with tablets, too" and, I agree, we can do that, but by replacing books with tablets, schools would be hurting their students by making them think that technology will ALWAYS be there to help them.

Clara Summers, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think textbooks shouldn't be used in the classroom. The reason for this is that, half the textbooks schools have, contain old material. They add extra weight to your bags, and half the students forget them at home because the books never get used. Students also have to pay for the book if they lose it. So my answer to this topic would be no, textbooks shouldn't be used in the classroom.

Richard Garza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Technology today in life has been advancing more and more everyday. Now you can save and search up things on almost anything instead of going to get your book and flip through all those pages. Many students are getting lazy and hate to use their books, and some school districts are allowing their students to use their electronic devices to help them in the classrooms. Electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods, and iPads, etc. I think textbooks should be a choice to students, they should get the choice to use their electronic devices or their textbooks to help them in their school work.

Josue Espinoza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think that textbooks should be removed from the classrooms because they are very expensive and we rarely ever use them. They are big and heavy and take up a whole lot of space. I think that we could easily replace textbooks with iPads or even iTouch. We could do everything electronically and not have to kill trees for the paper. I think that the world is evolving and that it is time for a more evolutionary form of teaching. I think textbooks are too old fashioned and traditional. I have all ways hated those textbooks.

Frank De Santiago, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I hate textbooks! There are so many reasons why textbooks are just awful. Most schools don't get new textbooks for years, so it’s not uncommon to see someone write "I was here" on every book. A reason why I really hate textbooks so much is because no one learns any thing from it. I can never learn from a textbook, just memorize. I can only try to remember things I read in textbooks till the big test. Text books are just a bad way of teaching.

Austin Miller, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Technology is advancing and progressing more and more as the years past. So many of the things we use to use such as textbooks, newspapers, maps, etc are no longer really that necessary for us because most of that can be found on the internet. Having to carry and suffer with a heavy textbook that is not even used often usually around 4 or 3 times out of the year is ridiculous and just a waste of paper. Back then it was more needed but since then technology has helped and improved the many things we didn’t have back then that we do now. Textbooks should not be used in class nowadays many people have smart phones, tablets, and laptops and can do or look up an assignment using those devices rather than a heavy textbook. I believe no more textbooks mainly because of the technology base society we live in today.

Savannah Lopez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think textbooks should be left at home. The books should be left at home in case you did not understand the lesson in class or need to review something. Textbooks should not be used in class because the teacher should be teaching you things, not the book. If a teacher uses the textbook in his/her class, it means that you can use the book and not attend class because everything the teacher teaches comes from the book. All you need to know is how to read and you should be good. That is the reason I think textbooks should be left at home.

Oscar Quintanillo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

The use of textbooks in class has no point anymore. Technology has increased to the point where everyone has internet, or a Smart Phone, iPhone, or iPad...Everyone can just now download the books....so no, I do not think textbooks should be continued to be used.

Blake Bloomquist, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks’ being allowed to be used in the classroom is a waste; the teacher is in the class to help them, the students, understand in ways that a textbook can’t explain. Instead of reading word from word, the teachers find ways to help the students understand the lesson by visualizing and doing activities.

Angela Chapa, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I as a student strongly believe that textbooks should not be used anymore. They take up a lot of space in our backpacks and they are so heavy to carry around all day long, especially while moving from class to class. Most of the teachers in my school don't assign assignments that involve with working from the book. They only give assignments from the book when there is a substitute. Most students don't learn from the book and prefer hands on activities, for example I would learn more by actually doing an experiment than by reading about it in a textbook. I believe that textbooks aren't really necessary for learning and many other students probably believe that as well.

Briana Garcia, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that text books should still be used during school because although technology is becoming our main use, students still need something they can do hands on and won't have a "glitch" or random fail. Books are always sure and handy and less likely to have "loss of data" or any problems that technology has.

Sydni Salinas, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I personally think we think should keep our textbook because it's easier to read and study then downloading the book on my computer or phone.

Laura Villarreal, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Technology is advancing all around us, and with that I believe schools should make a technological change as well. Not only would evolving from textbooks to a computer based learning environment promote a technological evolution, but it would help eliminate the issue of the depleting source of trees.

Stephanie Guerra, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think text books should not be continued to be used in the classroom because there just a waste of paper, and they're a hassle to carry. In most of my classes we don't use them at all, so why should we use them anymore. With technology we have today I think there’s no use for books at all.

Corina Carmona, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In opinion textbooks should still be used in class because some students prefer the book more then the teacher for notes taking. Also because some students understand the book better because the book has pictures about the subject and it makes it easier for them. The most important thing about the books is that it gives you more then enough information about the subject that you are learning. So textbooks should still be used in the classroom.

Jaime Aguiniga, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe textbooks shouldn’t be used in class anymore. I say this because some books aren’t really up to date; I believe we should use other forms to get our information due to the fact that in this 21st century the information is more accurate and up to date. With new post-modernistic ideas that we currently have, we shouldn’t use textbooks and we should post-modernize in the classrooms.

Christian Veloz, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

The more we read from the textbook the more information we learn. In my honest opinion I believe we should be using textbooks in class. It would be awesome to have a textbook online using the iPad. However what would happen if the iPad cracks or crashes? What would we do now?

Martina Hernandez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that textbooks should not continue to be used, for the reason that today's society has gone green. By that I mean that today most people have the environment in mind, and textbooks are always having to be updated which wastes more trees. The alternative to textbooks should be a tablet, iPad, or just anything twenty first century technology. By doing this it will lighten the load kids have to carry, and it will be implementing twenty first century technology in schools.

Marco Flores, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think text books should be used in school, but then it would be better to use computers or other devices. It would be easier to carry but then again we can't trust the internet unless they just put the text books in side the devices just to make it easier. Then we could just get rid of text books and have the same thing just on a device.

Juan Trigo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks have been used for a long time in the classroom as a way to learn. There are many different types of textbooks for different subjects, however much of the information on textbooks can be found on the internet. Technology has been increasing rapidly in a sense that whatever is found on ink can be transferred to a technological device and be read there. Therefore, there is no need for information to be written on paper. We may have been using textbooks for a long amount of time, but the new generation calls for a different method of learning that consists of the same information, but saves a lot of paper and time.

Christopher Ramirez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks are pretty much great for just about nothing. Let’s face it they are bulky, a pain in the spine to carry (trust me) and take up a lot of locker space.

Ben Ortiz, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks should not be used in class. The reason why I say this is because the society uses more technology now and technology has more information than a textbook. Textbooks contain a minimum of information, and technology is more updated. Every day there is new information than a textbook would have. The only thing that I dislike about technology and textbooks is that you need to have the certain amount of money to buy the computer or the other uses of technology, and the reason why I dislike textbooks is because textbooks are so old and they sometimes don’t contain the certain amount of information I or somebody else might need.

Daela Martinez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

My personal opinion on this topic is that textbooks shouldn't be used in classroom anymore. They are heavy and if you have a locker you sometimes get late to class because you have to go get them. I think teachers should stop and see things from the students prospective. It is much easier to learn when the teacher is explaining to you than reading from a boring book. I normally get sleepy when teachers make us read from the textbooks (especially English and History). If teachers really want us to pay attention they should think of new and fun ways to teach, not old boring textbook.

Luis Hernandez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Personally, I love textbooks and don’t care much for the idea of using a computer for everything. I have an easier time reading something off of a textbook than I do off of a kindle or laptop. Also, look at our textbooks today, they get lost, written on, and torn, imagine what would happen to electronic device. Teenagers are going to drop them, lose them, and also break them, I mean we love our phones like they’re our children, but even those devices tend to face a bit of abuse. Textbook use should be continued because it’s cheaper.

Elizabeth Escobar, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I personally think the use of textbooks in school should be discontinued; one is because we have so much technology and developments in our world that a whole textbook can be found online. Things such as iPads, computers and smart phones can hold all information found in textbooks making it so much more simple and easy for students to carry around. Students in school have to carry a textbook for every class this weighing down their backpacks and reducing space for other necessities needed for school. One device can hold all textbooks for students making them better than everyday textbooks.

Eric Gonzalez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Technology has positively impacted many areas of our life. It’s time we incorporate these advancements towards the area of education. Kids of this generation are more intrigued by electronic gadgets. So if we could change our text books for e-readers I believe kids would be more interested in what they are learning. Another upside of doing without textbooks is lower costs for school districts and not having to lug them around. I believe only good things can come from eliminating text books and embracing the e-reader technology. Let the change begin!

Jacqueline Garza, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe schools should only use text books when necessary. Now a day there is new technology invented to homework. Such as, iPods, iPads, etc. however, not everyone can afford them, so schools should still use text books, due to the fact that not everybody could afford new technology invented to do homework

Valentina Mandujano, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that we should still continue to use text books in the class room because if your ever absent and you missed a lesson all you have to do is go back to the book and see what you missed the day you were not in class. Also it can help you better understand what you’re learning in class because if you don’t understand what you’re doing you can go back to the book and it will help you understand what you’re doing.

Andrew Cavazos, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don't think we should use textbooks anymore. The school should let students use e-books instead. I mean just last Wednesday they talked about how we should move forward technologically wise. What better way to move forward than to ditch the books and bring in the small tablets. Out with the old in with the new. It would also be a lot better for the students. They wouldn’t have to be responsible for all the books given to us. The kindle is also small and compact which would be lighter than the huge textbooks. I’m sure my peers would agree.

Raul Medina, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Should textbooks continue to be used in the classroom still? Well In my opinion textbooks should still be used in a classroom, there’s many reasons why though. Not all students have cell phones to use to search up all the information or carry along laptops. Also not every classroom has computers to search up information, or don’t have many computers to support the whole entire class. Although, the libraries have many computer but what if the teacher doesn’t want to take the student’s to the library? Textbooks should always be used in a classroom to support those who don’t have these technology devices in possession. Technology shouldn’t always be relied on, textbooks should still be continued to be used for notes, assignments, further more for important information, and usage.

Christopher Trevino, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In my opinion, textbooks shouldn't continue to be used in the classroom because are not very portable, expensive if lost (and more expensive if going to college), and a bit dated. The e-books and just simply teaching them without textbooks are growing in use, and that should happen here as well.

Robert Ozias III, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don't think students should have text books in school. I think they are too heavy and take up to much space in your locker, backpack, etc. The only time I used my textbooks during my freshman year was to search definitions. I could have used a dictionary to find the words instead of looking in the glossary of text book. Technology is advancing and we can use our phones for so much more than just calling people. Maybe if people would put text books in iPads. It wouldn't weigh as much as normal text books. The only downside to that would be having people steal your iPad. If it was stolen then you might not be able to get another one.

Dylan Gutierrez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe text books shouldn't be used reason is due to the fact our generation is revolving around technology and everything we use is based on using the internet to find what we need. So why even bother having to open up an old text book when you have the most updated technology at your fingertips? That is why I believe by using technology to help out in the classroom is a better way for our new and improved generation, and I think that mostly everyone would agree on this instead of continuing to use text books.

Melanie Peralez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Ever since elementary we've been using textbooks. In elementary and middle school we had class sets, but in high school I realized that we had to check out our own and keep them in our backpacks. They are really heavy and to have to carry them everyday is a pain! It's rare that we use them all the time and its not like we read all 1,000 pages of it. So I say NO. Technology is already taking over and it is much lighter and less complex to use than a textbook.

Brianna Loera, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

The new slogan for WISD is "Empowering 21st Century Learners." So why not actually incorporate "21st Century" technology? The textbooks currently being used are smelly, over-used, and terribly outdated. It is already hard enough to carry a 5lb book with me everywhere I go but why must I carry two? A math book and chemistry book are required of me every day for school and we don't even use them. It would be much easier if the teacher had electronic devices that would have the online textbook on it already and save us the back-aching pain.

Carlo Serna, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

With all these new technological inventions in the past years, textbooks should no longer be used in the classroom because anything we would want to find can be found with the internet. We live in a generation where our textbooks are now smart phones and tablets.

Melberto Ortiz, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that it would be much simpler to carry a tablet than a textbook. Many students have to bear the weight of so many textbooks from all their classes when it is so much simpler to carry a tablet around. Today, some textbooks even have information that has yet to be updated and on a tablet it could be done in a flash. Tablets can even be used for the generations to come.

Anna Valdez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Books? Yes, I do believe books should still be used in classrooms and in all schools around the world. I believe in this because I personally don't like to use technology all the time, and I rarely enjoy reading books online. I love to have hands on material it gives me a better learning experience and it’s an easier way for me to learn and get my work done.

Valerie Rubio, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Well, yeah! I mean. There's not going to be another way of looking up answers for your assignment! I mean. Then again, if you're in a classroom where there's computers and internet access for everybody, then by all means, use it!

Marisol Villarreal, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks should no longer be used in schools because although they are used many people don't appreciate the useful resources provided by these books. Many times people write and rip these books and sometimes lose them and they end up not using them. Therefore, textbooks should not be used in schools anymore.

Silvia Garcia, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don't think textbooks are important for every class and I think they break my back. The book for my chemistry class is huge and hard cover and I hate carrying that around but it is really necessary for the class. Maybe schools should enforce technology and let us carry around iPads.

Lilibeth Hernandez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I honestly don't think we should have we should have text books in school anymore because we have so much new technology that we can just use the Internet. The books give us a lot of help during class but they can be super old and if they are going to make us use them they should at least be updated every couple of years.

Matthew Rosales, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

We don't want to use textbooks now n days when we can just Google every question n have an answer , but the way I think of it I say the textbooks are all ways a good source when trying to find a correct and proper answer also with out getting caught with using a cell phone because we don't want to give the school 15$ from are pocket, but when your a student who cant afford to use a computer or a cell phone the text book is always there for help also in getting answer but don't give up even on all the reading ,the reading also give you the extra help to understanding. In my words I don't want to use the textbooks I want to use the internet, but I still think if I need help I will always turn to a textbook

Melexis Garcia, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think that textbooks shouldn't be used in the classroom. The teachers should be the textbook and teach us what they know. Most teachers don't even use the textbooks anyway. I prefer to be fought by a teacher and not a book because I learn more when an actual person is explaining the lesson. I also think that cutting down a lot of trees for the paper is not good for the environment, and should be replaced electronically if they are to be used. Overall, I don't think they should be used.

Erika Alcocer, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think we should still use textbooks in class because if we don’t our education will just be based on technology. In our society today our lives have become so dependent on technology and without it we would be lost. If we take away textbooks then might as well throw away the books in the library. There so much information in our textbooks that might not be in the internet or a click away from our iPhones. Our education should still consist of finding the answers on a book or searching for definitions. If we let people take away textbooks then people can say we are lazy enough to not even want to look in a simple textbook.

Roxanne Arevalo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

A lot of students HATE using textbooks. I think text books are supposed to be used in class because the work is easier that way, and whenever they assign an internet assignment some students don't have internet access and it’s harder for them to complete the work. After all using textbooks is not that bad.

Bernice Urbina, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks should become obsolete because today's society has gone green. If anything they are waste of resources like our trees. Thousands of textbooks are thrown away each year and every year another forest is cut down causing global warming. The other reason textbooks should be no more is because twenty first century technology has taken over with tablets, smart phones, and faster CPUs. Today anything can be found on the internet; such as homework assignments and textbooks. So yes, I believe there should be no need for textbooks when we have so many other ways to have access to books.

Karina Badillo, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In my opinion, textbooks should still be used in the classroom. Why? Because a lot of people from our generation depend too much on technology. Textbooks would be a great way to make them realize that not everything revolves around technology. Sure, it helps in certain situation but sometimes we need to be a little "old fashioned".

Jascara Villarreal, Weslaco High School

Jean Bovee

In my opinion, text books should not be used in class anymore. Text books to me are pointless because everything we need to know should come from our teacher. Having to carry a text book around everyday to a class when you don't even use the book is not necessary. Text books also cost a lot of money, and students just vandalize them. Instead of buying so many textbooks, our Administrator should just buy us electronic devices. But to where we can only use them for school purposes only. They should be checked out during the first week of school, and be turned in the last week of school. I think it would be a big help for us, instead of having to carry those heavy textbooks

Allyson Mata, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that textbooks are redundant and we have the technology to access them whenever we need to. The reason for my statement is that we don't need to carry a fifty pound book in our backpacks that give us hunches and we barely even touch through out the school year. I believe it's the teacher's job to give us the information not a book that is vandalized and lost that comes out of our parent's pocket.

Michael Pena, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In my opinion the use of textbooks in class is pointless. All the information in the class should be given to us by our teacher. Most teachers only use the textbooks when they have substitutes in the class. When we go to get our textbooks it takes valuable time away from us that we could be using for learning. Textbooks are also very expensive. They cost the school almost a $150 dollars each. That is money that could be spent on something else. It is redundant to have to carry around twenty pounds worth of textbooks everyday that we won't even use in class anytime throughout the year. We should instead get issued a Kindle with all of the textbooks we need for that year. A Kindle is $150 and it can have all our textbooks in a light weight electronic that weighs no more than 10 ounces.

Everardo Chavez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I do not think textbooks should be used in school anymore because the world is now full of technology and we should keep up with the times! Saving paper is one advantage to this. Another would be the mass of the books as opposed to whatever device you may be using for that particular class during the day. This may be a loss for the textbook companies but a win for Earth!

Raamses Herrera, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In school I think that there shouldn't be text books for us to read and learn about the subject. Teachers get paid for doing their job which is teaching about the subject. Every teacher should know what to teach and what to say. Our textbook should be the teacher so we could understand what the subject is. In school I think we should start using technology for our classes. I think a textbook would not teach anything if you had a question or needed to explain something. A textbook would take a long time to find your answer, so that is why I think we shouldn't use textbooks and use technology.

Eduardo Varela, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Yes, textbooks should still be continued in the classroom. Even though Weslaco ISD school board approved to let us use electronic devices to search the web, it's not fair to other students who cannot afford a cell phone or Internet. I think that it's great to be able to use your phone in class, but I'd hate to be that one kid who has to use the textbook because he can't afford a cell phone.

Katelyn Lopez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I strongly believe that textbooks should not be used in the classroom anymore due to the fact that many students learn more efficiently through visual or hands on activities. I know that personally I keep the material longer if I have something to look back to and recall the lesson. Like a lab or video. This helps me recall the objective we covered more quickly. Instead of just reading a textbook and trying to understand the material on my own. Technology and Personal interaction stimulate my learning senses more.

Bryanna Blanco, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I strongly believe that textbooks should not be used in any classroom at all. Textbooks are not written every year therefore, what we're getting out of each textbook is old information. Besides teachers should already know what needs to be taught, and should not need the help of a book to teach us. Students don't really get any thing out of them either, just the simple instructions of "Take you textbook out" bores whatever we are getting planned to do that day. With all the different technologies that we have now, I believe we have no need of a textbook.

Kayla Burciaga, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks should not be used in class, because we have technology to help us finish our tasks faster. Technology is a light that will transform us into faster, smarter students. Technology is easier to keep up with assignments due. Technology now and days has so much information. I can practically get anything from the internet just by typing a few words. Society relies on technology more than hardcover books. The time it takes people to flip pages to gain information is more time than typing a few words and finding everything you need. Technology is also updated so that means we get more information that is new. While you would need to waste more money on a new textbook with the same information. Therefore I choose technology over textbooks.

Aaron Ramos, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

For my personal well being I believe that textbooks should not be used in class. They are heavy and very old with a lot of graffiti on them. As us students we do not like looking at books that have vulgar and immature images or language. It is very immature and people use textbooks just to write on them and do what they want. That’s where we used modernized technology and use the internet. Teachers would have less stress over missing books, and students without books. We are a 21st century school and I believe that we should use electronics and technology rather than old heavy books.

Cristian de Anda, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Personally, though textbooks can sometimes be a little behind (history books for example), I still believe they should not be replaced by laptops. Never heard of a textbook getting a virus, zapped by a close lightning strike, crashing, or having to call a tech support person because your book won't open. Yes they can be bulky and a weight load but personally I believe textbooks are the way to go.

Leslie Ramirez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I think that textbooks should not be used today because students don’t want to be carrying the text books all around the school. I think that they should be used online because now every one has access to the internet. The textbooks that we use are all ugly and old and they have graffiti all over them. Students dot like carrying the textbooks all over the school.

Luis Castellon, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that Text books should not be used anymore. For one it is very stressful to have to carry them with us everywhere we go. Especially if we have to carry one for each class. They tend to make students stress by the weight of the textbook. In all reality we honestly don’t use them most of the time. I think that we should implement electronical devices such as computers and iPads to make life easier for students as well as teachers.

Robyn Perez, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks are always used in the classroom. They are very helpful and resourceful. They only bad thing about textbooks is that they are very heavy and having to carry them around all day causes back and shoulder pains for all students. I believe they should still be used, but instead of issuing them out to student they should keep a classroom set in the classroom. Students will be able to use them without having to carry the weight of them all day and that will also be less stressful. Especially for student that are in other activities who have to carry other bags with them.

Brooke Bloomquist, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe textbooks should be used in the classroom. Teachers don't know everything, and if they ever need help or need to refresh their mind they can go through the textbook of whatever subject it is that their teaching. Textbooks have all the knowledge we need to know.

Danielle O’Bryant, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don't think that we should get rid of text books, but I do think that we should have an easier way to have them. For example, maybe we could use iPads or Kindle. Yes they might be a little pricy, but you could keep on using it for generations in the school.

Ralphie Casas, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Whenever I do an assignment that involves doing a worksheet from a textbook, I feel like a robot, the text is so dull and lifeless. Unless I’m doing an assignment that requires reading from the textbook, that I could tolerate. I feel like textbooks should be continued to be used in class because it's "old-school" knowledge. Learning "old-school" wise, is classical, it's like learning the way your teachers learned.

Alexandria Chantel, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I don't think textbooks should be used anymore, because for one with the new technology that’s been going around is not going to go away; many children can just look up and find the textbook online or Google the answers. Though many children now a days do not take care of anything that is given to them, unless it something more of a game use. Most kids can hardly keep up with having a spotless room and homework; do you really think they'd care for a big old written abused textbook from the school that is three to five years old? Honestly I know unless I would need it for class or a homework assignment, it would just be there on the floor at the corner of my room. In my opinion textbooks are pretty useless and unneeded.

Stephanie Puente, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks should be continued to be used in class because for me I’m usually more prepared for a test or an exam when I take notes from the textbook. Textbooks are also great because they have many examples or helpful hints that in my opinion help me a lot! Textbooks may be called old fashioned because of the many technological advances we have now but the people who built most of the technology we have now must have learned it from reading or getting ideas in the books so, in my opinion textbooks should still be used.

Joel Garcia, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

"Ughhh,"that's what I say; when I find out we are going to be needing a text book for a class. Textbooks weigh about 10-12 pounds and I hate carrying them around. I mean why we need to carry around a textbook if we really don't use it often. I have never had a class where we use more than half of the book the whole school year. We should be more in the 21st century and carry iPads.

Jeremy Casares, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

As students sitting in desks for about 8 hours a day and being stuck between four walls, that last thing we want to be doing is having our noses stuck on a textbook. Textbooks I believe should only be used when a student does not understand the material being taught by the teacher in class, so therefore they can refer back to it. We like to learn by demonstration, hands on activities, or discussion as a class, not straight from a book because even then, not everything is in a textbook.

Lindell Galvan, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Personally I am pro with no more textbooks most times you don't use it often in class it’s once in a blue moon. Textbooks are so heavy to carry around my backpack has ripped before carrying so many books its unnecessary extra and space. Many trees have been killed in making textbooks for students. Most textbooks are so old their falling apart students have been vandalizing page after page making it hard to read sometimes. Instead of making the expense of purchasing new textbooks schools should invest the money in technology for the students.

Lorena Fuentes, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

I believe that textbooks should be replaced by digital copies. Textbooks are not only expensive to purchase or replace when lost, but they are very heavy to carry around. Students today, have iPads, iPhones, smart phones, book readers and access to wireless Internet which make it easier to use and carry. It would be neat to read a digital book that has websites within it to support what is being read, or to click on a certain word and find the definition instantly without having to take out another book. Our backpacks would not be heavy and students would not have so many back problems. It would make our lives a lot easier.

Jay Venegas, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

In my opinion, I believe that we should indeed still use textbooks. I think we should because if we don’t understand what the teacher is saying or the assignment is a little hard to understand, the lesson should be an excerpt from the textbook and we can just figure out there what's going on. If we don’t use textbooks, what’s left to use? Technology? Yes, technology is fast, and efficient, but what happens when the internet goes down? How about if not everyone has a computer or phone etc.? There are just way too many problems that come with technology.

Kristian Herrera, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Whenever I do an assignment that involves doing a worksheet from a textbook, I feel like a robot, the text is so dull and lifeless. Textbooks are becoming less and less used in our modern day school with the way technology is advancing everyday. In 7 of my 8 classes I am using my phone for a dictionary, school textbook, etc. The only class I have to use a textbook is French and everything is literally at the palm of our hands so I don't believe using textbooks in school is necessary anymore.

Andrew Aldape, Weslaco High School

Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee

Textbooks have been used in schools and libraries for generations. It's practically a tradition using them. In history books, its pictures and facts on everything you will learn within the years needed. In science books, it explains how experiments have been experimented, how things were discovered, etc. Those are just some examples, there are many more, but those are just some of the basic books in high school. Point is textbooks give you a limited amount of information and answers, giving you a better, proper, easier way to learn. With internet, you learn, but not all websites are precise. You cannot always rely on what Google says. I say keep textbooks, continue the tradition, let's stick with the one thing that we can rely on and has the basic information needed for us to learn.

Justinee Ramos, Weslaco High School
