HARLINGEN - Alexandria Aces starting pitcher Alexis Sosa was perfect through five and pitched six 1-2-3 innings while striking out nine to beat the Harlingen WhiteWings 5-2 Saturday at Harlingen Field.
Joel Gonzalez broke up Sosa‘s perfect game after 15 batters with a leadoff single in the sixth.
Amadeo Zazueta added an infield single and David Cardona walked but the WhiteWings left the bases loaded.
After throwing a perfect seventh, Sosa again got into a little trouble in the eighth.
Gonzalez led off with a ground-rule double and David Fowler reached on an infield single. Zazueta followed with a fly-out to right.
Gonzalez broke for third, but right fielder Selwyn Langaigne threw out Gonzalez and Kevin Grriffin grounded into a fielder‘s choice to end the inning.
In the ninth, Cardona and Brian Nichols led off with singles. Ryan Fox and Trey Hendricks struck out. Matt Kramer drew a six-pitch walk to load the bases and Gonzlaez followed with a two-run single. Wayne Hedden came in and struck out Fowler to pick up his eight save.
Jorge Lugo (3-3) didn‘t allow a hit through the first four innings, stranding five walks in that span. In the fifth, though Homy Ovalles led off with a walk and Eddie Fitzpatrick reached on an error.
Bryan Sabatella followed with a three-run home run. Two outs later, Palmer Karr Jr. walked and Rafael Ozuna hit a two-run home run to make it 5-0 Aces and knock out Lugo.
Bobby Darling entered the game and got out of the inning. He didn‘t allow another base runner until the ninth when Fitzpatrick singled, but Sabatella followed by grounding into a double play. Luis Guance drew a seven-pitch two-out walk, Langaige reached on an infield single, and Karr was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Ozuna grounded out to end the threat.
