LA FERIA — Commissioner Eric Hoff stood up to run for office when nobody else would.
He won his election unopposed.
And at the Texas Municipal League conference held at South Padre Island recently, Hoff stood up again.
This time to receive the grand champion award from McAllen Mayor Jim Darling for best participation during the conference.
“I got up and accepted the award on behalf of the city,” Hoff said. “Nobody else was moving, so I got up.”
The city of La Feria was awarded the Grand Champion belt for participation during the event for city commissioners, administrators and employees.
“We had the most number of people attend the conference,” Hoff said.
The conference, organized by the city of McAllen, helped city leaders learn the ropes and meet other city leaders from around the region.
The two-day conference provided workshops and basic information to get city leaders prepared to hit the ground running.
Hoff said he attended a workshop about the Border Patrol that provided a perspective of the agency’s last four to five years in the Rio Grande Valley.
“They shared their recent humanitarian efforts helping the families that continue to cross the border,” Hoff said. “It was interesting to see them talk about what they do first hand instead of on TV.”
He also attended the municipal law course and a workshop on how to conduct an open meeting.
Hoff calls himself a rookie when it comes to his newly elected duty to help lead the city.
Hoff was sworn into office on May 16.
“I’m just learning the ropes,” Hoff said. “But I want to assist the city to be a business friendly city.”
