REYNOSA—A Tamaulipas state police officer was killed Sunday during a shootout with armed members of a criminal organization.

Rodolfo Montes was shot to death about 4 a.m. while patrolling along with a multi-agency group that included Mexican federal agents, an area near the intersection of Las Fuentes Boulevard and Rio San Juan Boulevard, according to a news release.

The assailants initiated the shootout which turned into a short chase ending at a blockade near the Reynosa-Pharr International Bridge and the Libramiento Colosio, the release states. By the time the officers cleared the way the assailants had escaped.
