SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Two people lost their lives on the Island Monday night, hours before the city’s big fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.
A man from Pearland, Texas, drowned and a woman from Port Isabel died after being struck by a car.
Danae Gomez Medina, 41, of Port Isabel died after she was struck by a vehicle, officials said.
Official said Medina was walking along the 700 block of Padre Boulevard around 7:10 p.m. Monday when she was hit by a car.
A police report stated James Edward Hull, also of Port Isabel, backed without safety and struck Medina, running her over.
Medina was air-lifted to an area hospital, where she later died.
Hull was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, authorities said.
City officials said 47- year-old Arlo Guess, of Pearland drowned Monday evening near the Saida Towers. His body was pulled from the water by the South Padre Island Fire Department Beach Patrol.
Guess was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. An autopsy has been ordered.
