HARLINGEN — A man accused of stealing a $2 beer is now facing felony theft charges and a huge bond.

Harlingen police arrested Jonathan Nicholas Alvarez, 23, of Combes, for stealing a beer worth $1.99 from the Stripes convenience store on Haverford Boulevard.

An employee said Alvarez walked out of the store without paying for the beer. Police say they arrested Alvarez at the nearby Walmart parking lot drinking the beer.

After he was arrested they discovered Alvarez had a previous theft conviction so his charge was upgraded to a state jail felony for theft and his bond was set at $15,000.

Wednesday night police say they arrested an 83-year-old man who is accused of threatening another man with a knife.

Police were called to the 600 block of Orange Heights where the victim said Moises Hernandez Perez threatened him with the weapon.

Perez was found a block away and arrested. He is charged with a second degree felony for aggravated assault, with bond set at $5,000.
