School district official says renovation project will cost $1.2M

HARLINGEN – Many of the Harlingen school district’s offices are scattered around town.

Offices such as those of the Parental Involvement and Child Nutrition departments will soon have one new home at the old Memorial Middle School.

Renovation work is scheduled to begin in about two weeks to create about 60,000 square feet of office space in the building, now known as the 13th Street Annex.

“We plan to be in by Christmas,” said Oscar Tapia, assistant superintendent for district operations.

“We’re trying to get the contracts signed, and the bonds, the insurance and the building permits,” he said.

The project will cost about $1.2 million, said Julio Cavazos, chief financial officer for the district.

It’s being funded by the $98 million 2010 bond issue.

“We’re just putting more office space to centralize the location,” Cavazos said. “It will be minimal renovation, knocking down walls to add more area.”
